Engine smell in cabin when boat is tarped for the week (350 i/o)

Thanks. I think that's what I'm leaning to at this point. Clearly by the comments this is not normal, and I guess that is what I was looking to find out. The project on the table for next Summer is a cabin refresh including new carpets, cushions, fabrics, etc .... so I think I will hang on till...

Engine smell in cabin when boat is tarped for the week (350 i/o)

It's not really gas that's being smelled, but that's a good point. That tank should be tested.

Engine smell in cabin when boat is tarped for the week (350 i/o)

Both vents are open, but of course no fan running. The present fan is on battery. I suppose I could run it. There is a charger on the battery so it won't go dead. I don't like taxing the battery though. Our cabin is pretty isolated and there is no one up there during the week so if the charger...

Engine smell in cabin when boat is tarped for the week (350 i/o)

Well, they're certainly all good now after the refresh, but I didn't see anything too alarming even before... just a decade of grime and such I do have a partially blocked view of the engine bay (blocked by the seller's head)... maybe you can see something which would cause the smell. (Now I...

Engine smell in cabin when boat is tarped for the week (350 i/o)

No, it's not a paint smell, or even mold/mildew for that matter. It just smells more like a garage in the cabin area. Now the boat was bought used and fully closed and tarpped on a trailer in a backyard for a number of years. I wonder if it's just the "garage" smell simply permeated into the...

Engine smell in cabin when boat is tarped for the week (350 i/o)

Actually it has just been cleaned and painted after a rebuild... which is kind of why I'm asking now. I still have to button up the wiring, so now is the time to do it, if I'm going to do it. Still, it wasn't too bad before either though

Engine smell in cabin when boat is tarped for the week (350 i/o)

When I tarp my boat for the week, I notice a slight engine smell in the cabin when I open it up on the weekend. I do have shore power at my dock and I was toying with the idea of running a small exhaust fan in the engine bay during the week (connected to shore power). We use the boat for among...

    Removed the Wrong Screw

Understood. Anyway... for those who have taken that screw out and heard that infamous "clink" as the backside falls down... followed by a swear word or two... Here's what you are looking for, and you will find it on the bottom of the cavity once you remove the drive (photo borrowed from youtube)

    Removed the Wrong Screw

I quite agree. The Cobra is a good and reliable drive. Of course the problem is that omc is out of business, but that doesn't necessarily reflect on the drive itself. My cobra is 34 years old and still working just fine. Indeed there are still a lot of cobra's around. Enough so that forums like...

    new to boats

Not a lot of weight difference between a 10 and a 20.... not enough to be any major factor anyway. The biggest factor is safety. We had a 15 on the back of a 14' aluminum and we upped to a Merc 20. With only one person in the boat with a wind, it became fast enough to be a bit scary. Trimmed and...

    Spare wheel hub... usefull?

You can't read? Come on man, tell the truth.... Did you really come back here after 3 or 4 days of silence in this thread because you are truly interested, or are you bored and looking for something to do? My guess is the latter. You have made it clear that you do not believe in my maintenance...

    Removed the Wrong Screw

I removed mine so I could paint the drive while I had it on the bench. Figured it would faster and easier than masking the screw head. I was wrong. What a pain in the azz to get it back in.

Wiring bow trolling motor on 13’ aluminum V

There is no law as far as I know that says you have to and there are certainly lots of people running open cables right on the floor of the boat, but if you are going to make the cables permanent and run them in places you can't see or inspect then it might not be a bad idea. If I was going to...

    Spare wheel hub... usefull?

Just because I had a breakdown on the side of the road doesn't mean "no maintenance". That's just you making a wild and unsubstantiated guesses based on a misunderstood picture. Bearings fail for several different reasons. Indeed cheap bearings fail faster than high quality ones. Why is that...

    Electric Boats

Sorry, I didn't mean using a river generator when you are moving. That would indeed present a tremendous amount of drag. I meant when anchored.... which is why I mentioned the moving water. If you have moving water around, then that can easily be converted to electricity. The wind generator...

    Spare wheel hub... usefull?

Baloney. You can both hear and feel a dry or failing bearing LONG before seeing it. If you are using your eyes on a bearing then you are the one with the questionable maintenance techniques, not me.

    Spare wheel hub... usefull?

Lift'em, spin'em, feel'em and hear'em You assume "No Maintenance" and that is the reason for the breakdown when the distinct possibility (and probability since only one wheel blew) was a weak and or defective bearing/race. What you see in the picture is burnt grease and hot metal with dirt...

    Spare wheel hub... usefull?

The spindle wasn't too bad. I originally thought I would have to cut it and weld on another one but when I got into it, I found the gouging wasn't that serious so It just needed to be filled, ground and polished. There were few ripped threads which I had to re-dress as well. New hub, bearing...

    Spare wheel hub... usefull?

It was actually the axle on that side ratcheted somewhat up to the frame, but no matter. There were a bunch of steps taken that day... and I would have told you... had you simply asked instead of attack, accuse and assume.

I don't know if you are operating in moving water, but a river generator may be worth looking into. There are several on the market both big and small, and they are not that hard to back-yard construct either. A small wind generator might be good too for when you are moving. Interesting project...
