    1976 Mecruiser 351W Ignition System

Thanks for all the info! I spent yesterday tearing mine down & cleaning it up. I found that the front retaining plate inside was loose that allowed the armature to move back and forth. It was rubbing a bit on the brush plate so maybe I am good.

I looked at the Sierra # 18-5903...that hose clamp around looks pretty redneck!

Learned that the Bendix drive has some sort of anti kickback keeping it engaged until the motor starts, which then kicks it back at a 'certain RPM'. So when I bench tested it the drive moved forward and stayed there since there was nothing to kick it back. Seems like this is why they chew up...

I am thinking I will have to pull the engine to replace the aft motor mount anyway... I did find the drive on eBay (I Hope)

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Ignition System

Thanks. I could probably clean it all up myself but no luck so far finding the 'drive'...which I think has failed since it won't retract.

    Identifying 1976 Engine-is it a 302 or a 351?

Mine is green and white. I bought it in Montana but then found out it spent most of its life on Priest Lake, where I have it now.

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Ignition System

With my Trim Pump almost sorted I am moving on the the ignition system...motor has (had) all kinds on automotive parts on it; carb, intake, and ignition. Distributor looks to be a normal Motorcraft with vacuum advance and the gray Ignition Control Module. Carb will be Edelbrock 1409 as the motor...

Thanks, the o-rings from Seaway (OEM) are only $1.36 so no big deal there. Yes, I did check the valve block and plan on running over both sides with surface grinder/stone. (have a client with a machine shop so I will let them do it)

Here is some useful info re: these older all metal trim pumps: There are 4 o-rings between the reservoir base and the valve body on the bottom-part number is 25-48171. This same o-ring is used on the filler screw (10-79953q04) so you will need 5. The large o-ring for the reservoir to is valve...

Definitely did not mess with the inner hex screw :) I did find the reverse lock valve NOS so I have that on its way and the reverse lock switch is installed. I am down to just sorting the routing of the hoses. I also now have the 2 service manuals for that year MC1 and found a 'test' diagram...

I think the fitting was changed to a inverted flare style because the SS braided line from the outdrive was routed directly to the pump.

My guess was wrong on the plug in the above picture. There is a hex adjustment screw under that plug.

Here you go @kenny nunez I am guessing the plugged port is where the low pressure line to/from trim sender goes.

Good to know that I will not have to be replacing all the seals. Thanks!

It could be PS Fluid. It is red and pretty light weight so I figured ATF. Sticker on reservoir says regular engine oil so knew it was not right. Standby for a pic.

I removed the trim pump today to sort the hoses and found that it has ATF fluid in the system...how scr*w*ed is it (am I)?

Yeah, I found those but a little too much $$ for a switch that is known to not last. But then again restoring an old boat will always be hard on the wallet. This is why I am thinking a type of prox switch. Just need to determine if the OEM switch is NO or NC.

Thanks, I did that and the cylinder does work. Lockout switch is on the way too.

Right, I am not finding the limit switch so I am thinking maybe a magnetic proximity switch solution. Epoxy a rare earth magnet to top of outdrive and the sensor in the gimbal ring. Might need a relay but I think it will work.

THANKS for your time on this!! You can't see it in the 2nd picture but the one line coming straight out (parallel to red wire) from the cylinder is just open; not connected to anything and yes, I did find a port on lockout that is open too. When I removed the cable plate (?) two springs and a...
