1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Weekend of a few time consuming things. First I installed the new remote T&T switch in the controls after work Friday night. Lousy video, but had fun doing it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWy3HT2edo4&t=275s After work Saturday I got the Hummingbird depth finder installed. Today was...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Had some time tonight, so I got the steering switched back where it should be. Was just glad Sunday I had a lot of experience flying RC where you have to switch your mind to reverse everything when the plane is coming at you. Pulled off the controls and removed the bad PTT switch. New one will...

    Need advise on replacing prop

Finally splashed my 1977 Sylvan Seaman 14ft 8" I call the Sea Monster yesterday. The motor I have is a 1992 Mercury 2 stroke 4 cylinder that came off a pontoon boat. The prop is currently a pontoon prop F12.25x9p. It shot quickly to plane and it popped up to 6200rpm in no time. I backed it down...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Interesting day to say the least. Did not start on a good note. Got everything hooked up early and got about 2 miles from the house when I noticed the right rear trailer wheel wobbling and before I could pull over I heard a nasty grinding noice. Watched the wheel in my side view mirror riding...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Anticipation is killing me. Checked and double checked everything (I hope). Added more wire holders to the conduit, vacuumed, scrubbed and rinsed the decks, cleaned the battery boxes, checked all battery connections, strapped down the battery boxes, INSTALLED THE PLUG, hooked up the water and...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

In spite of some rain yesterday afternoon and much of the night, I got all the important things on my diminishing checklist completed this weekend. Wired the new Garmin 93sv, tested and did a software update. Won't be mounting the transducer though until the trolling motor goes on later. I can...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Been slow going this week, but wired in a pair of momentary switches for checking battery voltages. Tonight all I got done was securing the fore and aft battery straps before hordes of skeeters chased me away. Air is heavy with storms on the way tonight. Time to drag out the Thermacell...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Didn't feel like there was quite enough pull required with five 40lb catches on each side so I added two 60lb units for each. Don't want them flying open in a chop and have anchor, tool kit etc come sliding out. Feels good to me now. I'm sure I would have been ok on most ramps around here...

    Bow stop position?

This is how I did mine. Everything in the turnbuckle assembly is rated at least 50% greater than the weight of the boat and motor. Takes less than a minute to undo or setup.

    Suddenly locked out

For a couple years I have enjoyed the thread "Funny "TLC needed" boat ads on Craigslist." Now when I try to view it I get "Sorry, you are not authorized to view this page. Please try logging in or logging in as different user Login or send a message to the admin" I did click on the "admin"...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Weather let up enough to get out and do some more before I had to put the ribs on the grill. Sometimes my ideas work ------ well not this time. I tried up use some "rare earth" magnets I had to hold the storage doors in place. Attached 4 to each door, made some steel angle brackets and started...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Between this and a heavy duty strap on the stern, this boat isn't budging until I'm ready. Made 4 12ga straps to tie in the new bow stop assembly so there's no chance of slippage. Everything torqued to spec.

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Couple of items I worked on this week. Bow stop assembly for trailer. Had my son-in-law do the precision bending. Storage doors for under the raised deck.

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Wish I could - sitting drives me nuttier than a fruit cake. The ignition plate I put on to mount the OMC switch left a big hole in the helm. Happened to be the perfect diameter for 1/2 of the dual voltage meter I planned to install, so I just drilled a 2nd hole along side it and got my unit...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Taking baby steps here lol. After work I got winter cover off and frame removed, put on the new registration numbers, stamps. Sylvan logos and USCG capacity plate. Not a whole lot left - just need some energy.

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Temps are finally decent, but can someone please clear the skies for awhile? The weather has been depressing. Bad enough to be working wounded. Xrays taken last week showed what I thought for the past few months to be arthritis in my right wrist is actually a tendon separation. I see a...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Been battling the T&T unit now for 2 weeks, but finally got a frankentrim working with parts from 2 units. Now I just have to find the short under the hood that keeps cutting power unless I hold the wires just right. Moved on to some trailer mods. After work yesterday I moved the power winch...

    T&T rebuild

Tried to remove the cylinder cap to rebuild my original 1992 trim cylinder last night. Managed to get about 1/4" movement then no more. I did accomplish bending the heck out of the new pin wrench I just bought. I'm going to try PB Blaster on it for a couple days then apply some heat before...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

After removing the original T&T unit to put the newer one in, I found out the old was bored for 9/16" pivot pins and the replacement was 5/8". I picked up some thinwall nylon tubing and made a couple bushings. Also the newer unit was a Design 3 which did away with the stupid blind driven...
