    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Test ran the Mercruiser yesterday with it's newly painted oil pan and stuff. First time letting it run over 5 minutes or so. Ran it about 25 and kept feeling around the block and whatnot, no hot spots that I noticed anywhere. Used a piece of aluminum angle as a stethoscope to listen to the valve...

    Pistons on Ford 302 / Mercruiser 188

That's awesome that you converted it back! The tripower setup looks so cool on there.. Heard the old 2 barrels had better mixing than the 4's at the time and that's why they ran it like that but don't really know for sure. Now I know this is a boating forum- but did you stick with the old 4 on...

Hopefully I will be able to get this thing apart, greased, and reassembled so it can be mounted on the console. Has a two wire pigtail that I'm thinking is a starter lockout for when it's in gear.

    Pistons on Ford 302 / Mercruiser 188

That is a gorgeous car! AND it's a convertible... I'm jealous. That color looks awesome on it, reminds me of the one from Bandits! I've wanted one ever since I saw that movie. And is that a 6 pack you got on there!? Thanks for sharing some pictures. Rust quickly kills all the cool cars around...

    Pistons on Ford 302 / Mercruiser 188

Good eye! I found the firing order to be the same, clockwise rotation motor, counterclockwise rotor rotation, and 1,5,4,2,6,3,7,8 when I was doing the new distributor. So is 170hp what a stock 1970's 2 barrel marine holley 302 would probably have?

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Thanks, me too! The console was partially made this weekend and I just couldn't stand to cut up the stenciled crate panel more than I already did so decided the plotter will just be mounted on the dash on its swivel just like the last boat. That's better for sharing the use of it with the...

Got a little more done on the console this weekend. Epoxied the planks together, cut guage holes, 1st coats of Spar varnish.

    Pistons on Ford 302 / Mercruiser 188

That's a great idea! And good to know they stamp the pistons like that sometimes. I'll see if I can find the cheapo bore scope I bought a while back and take a look. Would love to know if this thing was bored out or not. What year GTO btw? Love those cars, especially the signature grille...

    Pistons on Ford 302 / Mercruiser 188

You're right, it does look pretty dark. I'm thinking it's pretty likely someone blew the engine previously and just swapped in a (possibly rebuilt) replacement motor.

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

I really want to just mount it flush but I use my plotter and sonar so much, closely maneuvering around rocks and barely submerged wrecks. I've found myself switching to the standing position a lot and tilting the plotter way up so think the tilt is a necessity. But it sure would look a whole...

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Yes, it will be against the wall but will likely be spaced out slightly bc the wall has an overhang at the top. I'm planning on doing the steering like you're saying but even though I like the look of your layout idea more I think I might have to keep the gauges all together in the OG cluster...

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Mock up of helm, styro rectangles represent the instrument panel and throttle/shift control box. Going to try to make a recessed area for the plotter built in so it can still be tilted easily but be off the dash.

I hope it works out looking alright, I'm more of a metal worker to be honest!

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Been trying to figure out what I will make the helm out of now that new materials are out of the budget. After discussing an idea with a friend I decided to incorporate some cool local history into it. These pieces of wood are part of a WWII supply crate that was sent to an island amphibious...

    1975 oday 22

Doubting those were tinned wire marine extension cords... lol (if there even is such a thing) So sounds like a rewire is definitely needed then. I try to use tinned wire whenever I can but damn it's expensive. I'm sure you'll get it all straightened out. It's nice when you rewire things properly...

Wow, I just noticed that this post which I put in my own restoration thread, I somehow accidentally double posted it the same day to this thread too... I am terrible with this stuff apparently lol Can't delete it now but sorry- didn't mean to hijack!! Any pictures of Your wiring for Your boat yet?

Stripped the old paint off with a wire wheel. Did primer last night and doing 3 coats of Old Ford Blue like she deserves today, this is first coat. Man I love the darker Old Ford Blue color, should've stayed with it.

Thanks! I might be building the helm today and mounting that control finally.

    Pistons on Ford 302 / Mercruiser 188

OMC ran the blue on the block? Good to know. I think it's safe to say someone swapped this motor out at some point probably then. As for the deck- the boat has already been restored with all new floors and transom and whatnot, these pictures were to show the condition it was in when I found the...
