    You raise the lever.-----Turn key to on.------Push key in and hold it in.---Turn to crank it over while key is pushed in.--------Pushing key in and out does nothing !

    Well a 40 HP ( in good condition ) is bare minimum.----I think you need 70 HP for your boat.

    Running to the parts store gets expensive in a hurry.---Going to do this one little step at a time.-----Check the flywheel key.----If it is sheared timing will be way out.----report on what you find.

    The motor was marketed in 1957.----Serial # means very little other than perhaps the total # of motors made by the company !!

    Many consumable parts are available.----Visit / call your local Mercury dealer and see if they will help you.-----If you walk in with part numbers and cash it will be different attitude I think.

    If that is a 23" pitch , you might try a 17" or 19" pitch.

    Some will argue.-----Simple steps / no money steps to take.------Run with a timing light , one cylinder at a time.----Observe how spark behaves.-----Look into each carburetor with a strong flashlight at full throttle and observe fuel coming up the nozzles.

    Yes I know it is a 2 stroke !!!---Oil and lubrication in a 2 stroke are not well understood.------Good luck with it.

    Saabu ----You have no idea how the electric primer works.----Note---It is a valve and not a pump.----Impossible to puke out 1/3 gallon of gas during a start attempt.

    There was a service bulletin in 1994 to move tell tale fitting from the side of the block to the top of the block.-----I would be taking the head off to look at cylinder walls.----At 85 PSI there might be serious issues.
