    Remove bypass covers ( 4 screws each ) report what you see on pistons / rings.----Could be a blown head gasket as well.----As I say many times ---" it is so easy to trouble shoot " these simple reliable motors.

    If you are only getting 4400 RPM with a 17" pitch there is something wrong with your motor !!-----You need to do some testing / inspection.-----Post compression numbers ( #2 ) is often low.-----Does tell tale hose come off the top of the block or off the side on exhaust cover?

    Buy a can of engine tuner.----Follow instructions on can.-----Usually involves spraying into a running engine and letting it sit for a number of hrs.-----What is your engine doing / not doing that leads you to doing this procedure ?

    I use clutch dog / rotation of propshaft / moving of shift lever to line up the hole and the notch.----That way the bolt will not strip !----Learned that simple method about 50 years ago.

    Most 2 strokes have calibrated openings in the throttle plate.-----A 2 stroke must consume a calibrated amount of fuel that carries oil into the engine !!----As stated , timing is used to control idle RPM.-----A most mis-understood simple concept.

    1983 Merc 50hp is chugging after a minute of running.

    They all run OK on a hose in the driveway.-----Nobody can see or touch your motor.-----These motors are easy to diagnose.----If you answer the questions in post #2 you can save yourself a lot of time / $$$ / aggravation.-----Was water pump impeller replaced about every 4 or 5 years?---

    Did you install a new water pump impeller ?-----Sounds like it might have lost spark on 1 cylinder.----Test run with a timing light hooked to monitor spark.----Or perhaps water in the fuel.----Mixing at 50:1 in your fuel tank ?
