    Run with a timing light.----One cylinder at a time.-----When you think it is running on one cylinder , ----Should help you figure out which cylinder might not be firing.

    The 1996 model FORCE is shown to have an ENRICHMENT valve and not a choke flapper that blocks ( chokes ) air.----A wise owner would test all components that pertain to starting a motor !

    The newer distributers were like that.------I have more than 1 early Mercury magnetos and the rotor is a separate item.----Even on the 6 cylinder motors it was separate with input from 2 coils to the rotor

    The rotor is not part of the shaft.-----It is no longer available.----The parts for these magnetos are big $$$.-----But they are well made.----Lots of used parts available.

    You have likely damaged the starter with lots of cranking.-----Some will argue .----I would take starter apart for inspection.-----Do not rush out and buy a new one !

    These are shifted with oil pressure assist.-----Shift to FORWARD with a down motion of the shift rod.-----Lower units from 73 to 77 V-4 will work I believe.----If in Canada----evinrudeparts.ca----might be able to help.

    Have you installed a new water pump impeller ?-----Install a new diaphragm in the fuel pump.----When it is acting up pull the top wire off the sparkplug.---Will it start on the bottom cylinder ?----Repeat the test by pulling wire off the bottom cylinder.

    Can you imagine a $20,000 battery that can not be repaired.-----And nobody wants to repair this stuff either.------The liability on the fire risk in an underground garage is huge.----Insurance simply will not approve the repairs to this modern " junk " in my opinion.

    Agreed---Parts for many older motors are easy to find.-----The new generations do not have knowledge of simple mechanical , reliable stuff.-----Wait till the wiring and sensors on new EV cars start to act up.----Hugely expensive repairs or " throw it away " are in the future.
