    Quit on the Water!

So this is what new spark plugs look after 10 mins in my motor. New coils are on the way. At least it died in the barrel this time and not on the lake.

    Quit on the Water!

Just for the heck of it I made a small mark on the top of the cam where the top cylinder was at .020. Spun it around to the other side and it lined up perfectly. So 180* separation. I can see how some like the other method which may actually be easier, but this seems to work just fine if you got...

    Quit on the Water!

All my previous experiences with points have been on cars and bikes, but when I've checked with a dwell meter I've always found them to be dead nuts perfect. Maybe I'm amazing. Or just lucky. I'd bet anybody here a 6 pack though that I got those points perfect with the feeler gauge. Just...

    Quit on the Water!

Thanks for the pic. That felt piece looks just like the one that came in the kit. I don't have a bracket like that though. Guess I could make one, but think I'll just lube the cam and call it good. I don't think this motor will ever see a lot of hours as long as I have it. I live on a small lake...

    Quit on the Water!

I understand that, but the feeler gauge itself will tell you when you're on the high point of the cam. As you spin it, if you find a spot where the feeler is loose, well that's the true high spot and time to readjust. Not clear on the oiler thing. Are those the same as wicks? There were none in...

    Quit on the Water!

Not to brag, but I've got a multimeter and a dwell tach. I've never yet seen a time when I rechecked hand set points and found them off even a hair. Seems if you take your time and get the gap right there is nothing to be gained by messing with the meters. Just my experience. Going to button in...

    Quit on the Water!

I know that's good advice, but trying not to throw money into it if don't have to. Got two other motors I'm working on. They all need parts. Just got the Sierra points and condensers. They are not exactly like the OEM ones I pulled out. Close, but not the same. As long as they bolt up and I can...

    Quit on the Water!

The readings for the secondaries were through the plug wires instead of at the coils so the resistance is extra high. Couldn't get anything on the 200 scale, so went up to 20k. I was mainly checking for loss of continuity when the coils got hot. They seem to check out, so new points and...

    McCulloch Shear Pin Needed

What size motor do you have? I suspect brass is too soft for McCulloch and maybe the torque just simply twisted the last one into pieces. Where do you get your brass rods at? What is that stuff used for?

    Quit on the Water!

Interesting. Is it OK to run it like this? Difficult to change? Just ordered Sierra points and condensers. Figure I'll toss them in, set everything I can set and take it out for another run. Condensers tested good BTW, but bled down kind of weird. Seemed to retain a small charge. Hoping they're...

    Quit on the Water!

Started pulling ignition parts. Points look not too great, going to replace along with the condensers. Tested the coils for continuity and they seem OK. Got .9 on the 200 ohm scale. Does that seem too high? Measuring the secondary through the plug wires which I know effects the reading also...

    McCulloch Shear Pin Needed

I had a brass bolt, that's what I made the pin out of. As for a brass drive pin, do hardware stores have those? That sure would be convenient. I did manage to figure out what replacement I need and it's not brass at all. That may explain why this pin didn't last. If can't find one at the marina...

    McCulloch Shear Pin Needed

The one I need is bronze or brass and measures: 5/32"x1" Was afraid to put a nail in there, I just don't think a nail would ever shear. Found that a #10 stove bolt was just slightly over-sized. Dug up a brass/bronze one and cut it off. Peened it down to size on an anvil, by folding the threads...

    9.9 Spewing Fuel

Thanks for the info. Guess I need to pull it apart and see what's what. Amazing how much gas is shooting out of that thing though. I'd think a bad gasket would drip not spray. There has to be a major breach.

    McCulloch Shear Pin Needed

So finally got the 14 HP out on the lake today and all it did was rev, but no thrust. Took it back home to find the shear pin has been trashed. Don't think I did it, so it must have came this way. So can I buy one of these somewhere? Anybody have a p/n or know of another brand of motor that has...

    9.9 Spewing Fuel

I'm back to working on the Fastwin again, but expect to be doing something with this one soon. I'll have to check for the cheap fuel pumps. Are they pretty much universal? Will the same pump work on the 18 HP? So far the cheapest pumps I've found have been like 80 bucks. Seems not too cheap to me.

    Quit on the Water!

Are you saying coils and points should all be the same brand? Or that the guy got defective points, mixed brands maybe? Haven't ordered yet, but sure would suck if the new parts weren't any good. Doesn't look like OMC makes points anymore, so got to use something. A different brand maybe...

    Quit on the Water!

Thanks boat bros. Think I'm going with OMC coils and Sierra points and condensers.

    Quit on the Water!

Sorry, my bad. I'm working on two Evinrudes at the same time. This one is the 65 Fastwin 18 that needs coils. The 9.9 needs a fuel pump gasket I believe. I'm finding coils from $15 to $35 and seems the reviews are mixed on all of these. Even Sierra which many recommend seems to have quality...
