    Quit on the Water!

Thanks Chris that's what I was thinking. If I decide to cheap out, I'll just change the coils as it seems real likely that's the problem here. Just wish I had the parts numbers for the coils, points, and condensers, but guess I can google em up. Wasn't the end of the world having the motor crap...

    Quit on the Water!

Well if I'm following what you guys are saying, the coils are going to check out good because the engine starts and runs fine until it gets warmed up. Problems with points or condensers don't come and go, correct? So I'm leaning towards changing coils, condensers, and points. If I can figure out...

    Quit on the Water!

Thanks for the tip. I currently have his site up in my browser. Interesting stuff! Really had to dig to find it though as all the links to it on iboats are now broken it seems. So to be clear, coil = magneto? Regarding replacement parts, seems to be a lot of difference in prices. Sierra is a...

    Quit on the Water!

Thinking of changing it all, but hate to just throw parts at a problem. Guess I'll test what I can test today. Are the coils, points, condensers all sold as a kit? I really don't want to put a ton of money into this motor if don't have to. I'm thinking though with condensers they either work or...

    Quit on the Water!

3/16" is pretty much average on the 3 motors I have. All are older, none will jump a 1/4" like many people say it should. This thing ran really good though when I had it on the water. It just up and quit after about 10 mins of low RPM running. I gunned it a few times, but since this was a test...

    9.9 Spewing Fuel

Model no. at the bottom of post. It's a '75. Best place to get a kit? Amazon? I know some don't like that place, but I like how fast they ship and the wife has a prime acct, so saves a couple bucks on shipping.

    9.9 Spewing Fuel

Right out the side of the fuel pump! What's up with that? Replace? Rebuild? Make a new gasket for it? And yes, I'm actually working on two Evinrudes right now. This little guy seems smooth and quiet. I just need to find a way to keep the fuel in it. m/n: 10524C

    Quit on the Water!

Bought a spark tester a couple weeks ago and checked this motor with it. Jumped about 3/16" and looked healthy. Bright anyway. Thought about checking for spark when it quits too, but that might be hard to do out on the lake on a sunny day. Think I'll try the hairdryer trick. Should work for...

    Quit on the Water!

Thanks Jimmbo, that's quite helpful. Happen to know how many ohms they should read?

    Quit on the Water!

When said it looked OK, I meant nothing seemed obviously amiss. Pretty sure I can test the coils, I have an ohm meter. How will that tell me though if they wonk out when they get warm? Heat them up somehow while measuring resistance? Do these coils look original? I really expected them to look...

    Quit on the Water!

OK cool. Thanks. So I got the flywheel off and everything looks OK to me, but what do I know? I'll post some pics up in a bit to see what you guys think.

    Quit on the Water!

At the risk of sounding stupid, could you please tell me which parts are the magnetos? I don't see them in the parts list: https://www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1975&hp=9.9&model=10524C&manufacturer=Evinrude&section=Magneto

    Quit on the Water!

I just cleaned the carb and it was running real nice right up until it wasn't running at all. Got it back on the stand, going to pull the flywheel and have a look. Guess it's time to give the McCulloch 14 some lake time! Just got it going a couple weeks ago so this is a good excuse to test it out.

    Quit on the Water!

What about coils? When I pulled the plugs one looked a bit sooty, but the other looked fine. So I'm thinking the issue must be mainly with one cylinder. Can the coil work when cold and then quit when warmed up I wonder? How would I test for something like this?

Evinrude Fastwin 18 No Full Tilt Lock

Was looking things over yesterday. A transom saver, one of those arm things, would have to be like 5' long with a 45 in it to reach from motor to trailer so I'm thinking this isn't really going to work. It's just a long way under the trailer to anything to brace it to. How does the broomstick...

Evinrude Fastwin 18 No Full Tilt Lock

All good points. I need to think about this. For now I'll leave it down as I'm only a block from the lake, but going further I'll need to do something. That friction adjustment sounds familiar. I'll have to see if have one of those.

    Quit on the Water!

That all seemed OK. Have clear lines, could see gas in them. Even if fuel pump dies it should run if you pump bulb, right? The fuel line looks new, but seems soft to me. Shouldn't fuel line have lettering on it? I'm thinking maybe when it gets hot under the cover the soft line gets even softer...

    Quit on the Water!

Well my fun day was a short one. Recently got done working on my 65 Fastwin and it seemed to be running great. Started on one pull, idled nice, accelerated smoothly. First time with a new motor I was going pretty slowly trying to stay on the end of the lake were the ramp is. After about 10 mins...

Evinrude Fastwin 18 No Full Tilt Lock

I have 11" of clearance under the motor when it's not tilted and when locked down it's rock solid. Should be OK, right?

Evinrude Fastwin 18 No Full Tilt Lock

Thanks F_R, I was going crazy trying to figure out why I couldn't find a lock or even something that looked broken. Seems odd that the motor doesn't lock into position. Makes it pretty much un-trailerable, no? I'm only a half mile from the ramp though so doubt if it matters too much. I did not...
