    Making Gaskets

Thanks for the link. Didn't know about that stuff. I found a water pump gasket for a SBC that had the right ID and thickness. I cut the OD down to fit. Just don't know how it'll like gasoline since it's made for antifreeze. Fingers crossed. Good to know they sell cork by the sheet. Yes the bowl...

    Making Gaskets

Not sure if this is the correct forum or not, but just wondering if can get a little advice on making gaskets. I pulled the sediment bowl and screen off my old 14 HP McCulloch and the cork gasket is falling apart. Would it be OK to cut a new paper one out of gasket material? Double it up maybe...

    14 HP McCulloch Question

Well I got the spark tester and as far as I can tell she's not making a spark. I'm never confident though when I can't find a spark that maybe my ground is no good. There is no bare metal anywhere, it's all painted. I squirted some gas/oil mix into the plug holes and pulled it a bit, no start...

    14 HP McCulloch Question

OK thanks a lot! I was a little worried actually. Guess it's time to roll my sleeves up. As soon as I get a stand built going to have a look at the points. Might squirt a little fuel into the cylinders first though just for the heck of it to see if she kicks.

    14 HP McCulloch Question

OK, I figured out what you guys mean about measuring the spark gap and ordered the tool. My current thoughts are to clean out the carb and pull the flywheel to inspect the points. I'll wait on the points though until the tool comes tomorrow, but suppose I need to get in there for a looksie...

    14 HP McCulloch Question

I'm not sure. Used a spark tester that I bought for lawnmowers. It's a plastic chamber with leads that connects between the plug and the cap. Hard to ground a plug with one hand while pull starting with the other. I like to stick a screwdriver into the boot and ground it or sometimes put spare...

    14 HP McCulloch Question

The top screw says idle, which I find kind of confusing. Most carbs I've messed with you adj the idle with a set screw that rests against the linkage. This one I guess is for adjusting mixture? At idle? So it's actually the low speed adjustment? I know better than use a lot of pressure to seat...

    14 HP McCulloch Question

Well now the dang thing won't start at all. All I did was fiddle with the adjusting screws. Thought I had a Carter carb, but turns out it's a Tillotson. Never even heard of these and can't find this exact carb online. The m/n is: MD 1388. I was told to set the idle and high speed screws at 3/4...

    14 HP McCulloch Question

So, it's a Tillotson MD1388. Guess I'll go with the 1 1/2 turns out to start with. Unless I can find something specific using the search function. Is this a fairly common carb?

    14 HP McCulloch Question

Just realized I don't know which way to turn the idle knob. I know, that sounds dumb, but there's no markings on it anymore and it doesn't really seem like it's working right. If I turn the throttle way down the engine wants to die. Doesn't seem like it matters where the idle is set. Weird idle...

    14 HP McCulloch Question

Thanks again. I'm going to try your method tomorrow. This seems like a really good little motor. Found a sales brochure on line that said the 14 HP along with one of the bigger ones were designed to be workhorses and built with better parts than the rest of the line.

    14 HP McCulloch Question

Maybe so. Been guilty of this in the past. Just trying to do this correctly and most of what I'm reading says to adj carb for highest RPMs and then to set the idle at a specific value. At a bit of a loss guessing how slow is too slow on the idle. Current issue is if I shut the throttle all the...

    14 HP McCulloch Question

The meter works as a dwell or tach, but what I'm mainly interested in right now is finding out how many RPMs the engine is turning to aid in adj the carb. Mine has an inductive lead that clips over a plug wire, I'm just at a loss where to pick up 12V from to power the meter itself. Is there a...

    Are Impellers Unique?

"Yep, pump needs to be lower than water to prime" I'd have never guessed that. Guess never too old to learn something new. Now I just need to learn how to adjust the carb.

    14 HP McCulloch Question

Is there any info out there on how to dial in the carb? I watched a few youtube vids, but they were pretty generic. I'd like to hook up a dwell tach to the motor but am at a loss where to pick up power from. Can I just use a spare car battery you think?

    No Water - How Long?

How long is too long is longer than 1 minute anyway! I guess these are some pretty stout motors. Think I got real lucky. She's pumping water and I'm stoked to get it out on the water.

    14 HP McCulloch Question

Wow what a nice guy that Brian is. He told me everything could ever want to know and then some. Said he wasn't surprised my impellers survived running dry for a little while. That they are a very good design that almost never fail. Fired up on 3 pulls and started spewing water right away. I just...

    Are Impellers Unique?

Looks like I got lucky. She's pumping water! I'd have never guessed the water needed to be so deep. Figured if the intake was submerged it would take in water. Fired up on the 3rd pull and started spitting out water. Lots of it. Many thanks for the support and tolerating my noob questions.

    Are Impellers Unique?

How does one match these up? I'd guess the ID would have to be right for sure, but also I'm not so sure that couldn't be reworked by a determined individual. What are they made out of, plastic?
