Evinrude Fastwin 18 No Full Tilt Lock

The piece just doesn't feel right. It moves around too easily. Guess maybe it's not a problem it it's just for remote control. That's a really good idea about the transom saver. Is this something I can make myself or should I buy one? Currently on the backburner after the motor conked out on me...

Evinrude Fastwin 18 No Full Tilt Lock

Think something must be broken or missing. I can't for the life of me figure out how to lock the motor in the full tilt position for trailering. It will lock into the down position using the lever in the front, but not up. There is a part on the starboard side that I can't figure out what it...

    Depth Adjustment

Thanks for the reply. Sure wish this thing wasn't so tall. It's like it was built for a much bigger boat. Currently mulling over the idea of shortening the shaft. Be more useful if it was about a foot shorter.

    Depth Adjustment

Recently bought a boat with a Prowler T55/40 (I think) trolling motor. From what I'm seeing online it's not the greatest motor, but it seems to be in working condition. On my Mirro Craft, with the prop just a little below the bottom of the boat, the handle is way up in the air and awkward...

    Plastic Tanks are All Junk

That's an interesting idea embedding a metal fitting. I think they make brass reducer bushings that might be just the ticket for this. If my repair fails I'll look into this for sure. As to plastic welding, that's basically what I do with the glue gun. It's not a crafts gun, it's a HD Sears...

    Restoring McCulloch 14HP

Thanks for the picture. At least now I know what I'm looking for. That looks like an emblem to me, but mine doesn't have any mounting holes so I suspect it orginally came with a sticker. Likely a Sears sticker as it was sold by Sears. I just think the McCulloch name is cool, Sears, not so much...

    Plastic Tanks are All Junk

Something curious about my tank is that there are about twice as many female threads in the tank compared to the fitting. Seems to me if the elbow was a little longer it would be much more resistant to stripping and popping a thread. It's not been in the water or seen any use yet, but it sat all...

    Restoring McCulloch 14HP

I posted under Other Outboard Brands and got no responses, so I posted here and it got moved. Now I have two posts that are almost identical there. Since I'm wanting to restore an old engine, this forum seems like the best one. Am I wrong? Sorry if not following the rules, but I don't see a...

    Restoring McCulloch 14HP

Looking to purdy up this old gem. Got her running nice, but she looks mighty plain with scuffed up whitish paint and no emblems/stickers. Looking for a paint code or something off the shelf that is a decent match and a source for decals or emblems. Prefer McCulloch, but I guess the Sears logo...

    Plastic Tanks are All Junk

Yes this was likely owner induced, but not this owner, the last one. Ended up using hot melt glue, as it's supposedly unaffected by gas. Also it dries quickly, unlike JB Weld. Put a nice coating on the threads, then quickly snugged it back up to the point where it usually seals. Went around the...

    Plastic Tanks are All Junk

Yep as portable as 40 lbs of gasoline is to lug around. LOL I have 4 Permatex products on hand. Trying to decide what my best bet is: Anaerobic Gasket Maker Ultra Blue Hylomar HFP #2 Form A Gasket Sealer It shouldn't take much it's just seeping a little bit. I also have JB Weld, but a bit iffy...

    Plastic Tanks are All Junk

Is this true? Picked up a Mirro Craft with a Seasense tank. Soon found it was a leaker. Fixed the leak in the fuel line, but the plastic elbow going in the top is stripped. It'll get pretty snug and then not leak, but soon it pops up a thread and starts seeping all over again. Think part of the...

    Restoring McCulloch 14HP

Could you point me in the right direction? I've looked around a little and not found much for this motor. A paint code or a close match would be great. I found a site that sells stickers for outboards, but they didn't have anything for McCulloch.

    Restoring McCulloch 14HP

Does anybody else think their outboard looks a bit beat up and want to paint and re-badge it? I recently brought a cool old outboard back from the dead, but it looks pretty plain. I'd like to spiff it up some. I can paint and do bodywork, so that's not an issue. I just don't know what color this...

    14 HP McCulloch Question

Woohoo! Finally got her running and wow what a nice little motor. Smooth from idle to WOT. Pushing lots of water out of both holes. I didn't kill it after all! Now I can't wait to get it out onto the lake. Something odd about this motor is that it won't do squat unless the throttle is mostly...

    Cold Compression

OK, cool. Maybe all is good then Going to be honest here, I've never worked on an outboard before. I did not know it had to be so low in the water when I tested it. As soon as I saw no water flowing I shut it down, but still it ran for about a minute. Ran it again with good water flow and she...

    Cold Compression

My apologies once again if this is not the proper forum. The Other Outboard Brands forum seems pretty deserted, so I posted here.

    Cold Compression

Should the compression bleed off quickly on a cold motor? Trying to decide if have a compression issue or not. Watched some youtube vids and those guys' motors seemed to hold the compression pretty well, but think they were warmed up already. I've got 80 and 90 psi on the 14 HP McCulloch which...

    14 HP McCulloch Question

OK the points look fine. Sanded lightly with 320G and re-gapped. Business card dragged through had a slight stain and it looks a little wet under where the points mount. Is this a problem? Also should that little fuzzy piece get a drop of oil or maybe white grease?

    Making Gaskets

Good stuff guys. Thanks for the edjimication. I'll figure this all out yet. Going to be so cool to get this thing running like it should. It ran when I got it and then just quit.
