    70s merc 850 85 hp mercontroller

The mechanicals (shifter and throttle) of the newer Mercury controls will work just fine. The wiring is also compatible, but the connection to the motor is quite different. The newer boat harnesses have a round 8 pin plug, with 2 bullet connectors for trim and tilt. The extra wire is for...

    1976 Mercury Tilt/Trim Controls

That is the way it is supposed to work. Middle button is trim up. Trim stops when the trim limit switch on the starboard trim bracket opens. There is a stainless steel "finger" that pushes the switch open or shut. It is adjustable, and is supposed to open as outboard trims up to the point...

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

A little turpentine cuts the old dried grease quite well. Quicksilver makes a excellent product for steering rods. It is a bit thinner than marine grease. It is special lube 101.

Gee, that info is usually in the owners manual. Anyone look there?

    Quick question

Definitely premix until you are sure the injection is working. Look for an oil tank in the bilge. The OMS (injection ) pump on under the airbox, in the front of the motor. It is a black round pump with a rectangular front. Look it on the crowleymarine web site. The OMS pump could be used...

    What is Primary Pickup?

You should also buy a caliper, so you can set the timing pointer correctly. The sequence is to remove all spark plugs, and measure from top of #1 piston at TDC to cylinder head. Now add that measurement to .464 inches, and rotate the piston until the piston is recessed by that sum. Now...

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

Todays 2 cycle oil has a dye in it to color it. That yellow fluid could be gasoline mixed with Straight weight non detergent motor oil, as was done in the 60s. It had a typical motor oil color, and looks kinda yellow when diluted with gasoline. Drain the carbs and see what color the fuel is.

    What is Primary Pickup?

Primary pickup is a synchronization of the spark advance and the carb throttle plate. On the Merc V6 motors, the carbs should start to open when the timing is 4-9* ATDC. Max spark advance is 21*BTDC on those V6 Mercs. You want to get these settings correct or you can damage the motor.

Mercury 850 thunderbolt 1974 gearbox check

You can remove the six 5/16 bolts that ring the flywheel nut. That removes the outer flywheel. Set the motor to TDC before removing the outer flywheel. The stator will come off with a allen wrench. Expect the wiring to be bad up to the stator. Dingbat, despite what your regulation says...

Grease fittings usually unscrew. You can buy replacements as well.

Mercury 850 thunderbolt 1974 gearbox check

It is a bad idea to put a fuse on the charging wire. If it blows or has a bad connection with the engine running it will destroy the rectifier. I am also not sure what would happen to the switchbox, if the fuse blew with the engine running, as the battery regulates the voltage. You might...

98 Evinrude 115 (E115SLECM) Not going into gear

As Racer said, the shift rod can bind where it goes thru the shift pocket cover. However, this usually affects reverse, as the shift rod is pushed down for reverse. If your motor shifts smoothly, at the engine (prop being turned), the issue is shift cable or control.

Mercury 850 thunderbolt 1974 gearbox check

Those engine harnesses are available on the web. Of course you could make your own with 7 different color wires and some ring terminals. Check the wires that go to the distributor. They also go bad. The rotor is non-removeable, fragile and $240+USD to buy. You need to install it then...

Be aware that your cunning plan B can leave you stranded on the water, when/if the gearbox fail under use.

Mercury 850 thunderbolt 1974 gearbox check

If the gearbox was full of water, the gears and bearings are likely bad. Fixing them takes special tools and expensive parts. If the engine runs well, you might look for a new (used) gearbox.

    98 Johnson leaking hydraulic fluid.

My '98 Johnny 150HPV6 has a grease fitting under the manual tilt lock. That is for the steering swivel. Yo need ti tilt the motor and swing the manual lock down to get to it. It also has 2 grease fittings on the tilt tube.

    Looper or cross flow

A crossflow will usually have removeable transfer cover plates on the side of the block. Loop charged motors do not usually have those.

Can you change from welded to bolted?

Bolt on crossmembers have fittings that bolt to the crossmember and the frame. This allows them to be flush with the frame. You would therefore need to find both pieces of hardware. The real question is whether the frame is solid, as well as the springs, axles and wheels. If those things are...

    Adding a Temperature Gauge

Be aware that temp gauge senders are different than overheat sensors. I expect the sensor connected to the guardian system is the latter. Overheat sensors will not power a temp gauge as they are open or grounded, whereas a temp gauge sender has variable resistance to ground, based upon the...
