    electrically I do not think the engine cares when you go reverse what about the GC any chance a gear issue kills the engine while running at 6-700 rpms . check the magnets in the GC for chips does it die just going neutral at all or just going reverse . you indicate no fault...

    I have a 2005 75hp ETEC...wonderfull machine never stranded me 10 miles from camp.... but I carry my 2 stroke kicker anytime I go 100 feet from shore.....my latest is a nice 50 year old 4hp Merc single cyl. with phase-maker ignition. it just purrs hours on end all day long all week long .

    The early ETEC like my 2005 mixed some xd100 in the fuel line which was good to oil the HP pump & injectors it seems. They later stopped that oiling function. In effect , it is now suggested to mix some... oil in the fuel ( search Oly's brew) to oil the HP pump and prevent rusting...

    ETECs burn about 40-50% less gas .. my 2005 - 75hp runs cheaper than my old merc 500 carb it burns .6L /hr trolling. next to no smoke/smell using xd100 oil at xd100 setting.... if not on XD-100 setting it will used either tcw3 or XD100.. .. theengin can run with no oil for a while...

    to work good some of the older engines have markings on the recoil base which must line up... I do not know if it is the same for a 55 recoil but check for bars and an arrow asin this picture. when the rope is rewound the arrow must line up with the bars
