    Mercury Switch

What year is the motor? Not all Mercs have the mercury switch. Look for an item that looks like a condenser, only plastic, with 2 wires, one of which is grounded to the cowl support.

    Water pump

Places like crowleymarine and ebasic power will provide you with info based on your numbers. iBoats may have that as well.

    Now what

Gee, I dropped my fat-fifty into saltwater while running on plane. It was underwater for 60 hours. I pulled the crankcase cover and pushed some heavy oil-gas mix thru it, cleaned the starter, distributor, carb and reassembled. I hade no hope of it working again, but I was able to pull start...

    Mercury throttle hook up

In the fourth picture you can see the barrell clamp. The shift cable lies in the tray, flat, an connects to the shift slider, with the aluminum peanut-shaped clamp and nut. The throttle cable is directly on top, connected to the large throttle arm bolt with a nut. The two cable barrells fit...

battery drain when connected to charger?

A properly working charger will not drain the battery. It has diodes, which are one way electricity valves to prevent that. I suspect your battery is near end of the line. They usually last about 5 years.

    Mercury throttle hook up

The barrell clamps have a tab and a swinging keeper. You swing the keeper all the way toward the block, insert the tab into the barrell clamp, and swing the keeper away from the block until it snaps closed. Was that the question?

    1984 35hp mercury steering part

You want a boat steering arm like this? They got 'em on flea bay and amazon, and likely other places

Power trim goes up, not down

Make sure the ground wires on the up relay are clean and well connected to ground. When you command the trim down, ground is supplied to the up (blue) wire of the trim motor by the not energized relay.

    Mercury throttle hook up

Looks like an inline 6 engine. The throttle cable hooks to a bolt on the large throttle arm, directly above the shift cable. Both cables share the same clamp for the barrell fitting. Set the throttle barrell to push the throttle closed, control in neutral, with a bit of preload.

    Controls or cables?

MerControl units go from 12 o'clock (neutral) to about 9:30 (forward), before throttle linkage starts to move. That is normal. As long as you get full throttle, they are working correctly. Cables are available at many places. Controls are available from Mercury plus many aftermarket...

My Boat capsized and asking help in figuring where the water came in!

The most obvious answer would be a broken thru hull fitting. Alternatively, if the livewell was operating, maybe the drain clogged, or broke at the thru hull.

    I want to add a 2nd killswitch to my 1996 Johnson 50

If the motor will not turn off with the current ign switch or kill switch, it is not likely their fault. To kill the ign, the black/yellow wire is connected to the ground (black) wire. I suggest you see if that is happening. In your case, I would look for the black wire in the engine harness...

    Compass heading

Gee, do you know why they call that kind of navigation "Dead Reckoning"? Because if you mess it up you are dead... At least get a chart and pick out some waypoints. That way you can tell earlier if you are lost. BTW cell phones do not work offshore, as there are no cell towers out there. You...

    Anyone Seen these?

OK, so the prop is $4500 more than a high performance SS one. That is many years of gasoline savings to break even., if ever. Now if it was able to walk the dog and make dinner, plus double the efficiency of my boat, that would be worth considering. Lets say you have a $500 mousetrap, that...

1985 Mercury 85hp (4 cyl) runs great for 20 minutes then boggs down

Chris, That is an ADI engine. That makes it 1976 or newer on the 4 cylinder motors. I would like to know where you got those idle pickup and max spark advance specifications. As far as I know, all ADI motors use a 0-9*ATDC for idle pickup and 21* BTDC for max spark advance.

Bypass VRO and use Fuel Pump

Is that motor a 60* V4? If so, the vapor pump assists the OMS pump. The OMS pump is the one that injects the oil into the gasoline as it pumps it. The vapor pump is an easy rebuild. I would also rebuild the vapor separator as well and see if that fixes it. A new OMS pump is $500+ for OEM...

    Voltage regulator

See what the crowleymarine web site recommends for your motor and then search that part number for aftermarket source. If you don't like that, you will need to really go DIY and find something from a motorcycle or generic.

    1984 35hp mercury steering part

Gee, get on one of the steering system OEM web sites and see what it is called. I expect a marine store will stock them. What is that knobby thing above the motor steering arm? Some sort of nut?

What Pipe is Best for Bilge/Livewell Plumbing?

I used "Shields Series 148" for my scupper hoses. They are rated for below waterline use and I expect them to last forever. They are tough to bend to shape, but easily seal to the thru hull fittings.

    Gear ratio change/unknown oem prop

So you went from 1.5::1 ratio and 19 P prop to a 1.84::1 drive? You will want a prop with more pitch. Simple math suggests a 23 pitch prop, however, that is just a multiplication of the ratio difference, not considering the power curve of the motor. If you could try a 21P prop, and see what...
