    That PTT motor will usually have 3 wires (blue, green. black) a solenoid or maybe 2 solenoids, and no relays. Some had only one solenoid for up and the green wire for "Down trim" was wired directly to the PTT switch. So take a look at your PTT unit. See if it has one or two solenoids...

    You likely have a small air leak in the fuel line from the front tank, that is not common to the rear tank. At idle the air leak starves the engine for fuel. At high RPM, the pump can pump enough fuel, over the air leak. to cover it up.

    The black/yellow sires will disconnect at the switchboxes. You will need to choke the motor to stop it, after disconnecting those wires.

    Mercury has a low speed and a high speed stator winding. Maybe the high speed winding is bad? Alternatively, Sounds like either the killer wire (black/yellow) is rubbing ground, when you are bouncing around at high speed, or the stator feed to the switchbox is intermittent.

    The trigger is a lever under the flywheel. It is connected by linkage to the carbs. As you move the throttle, the trigger should move also.

    A leaking fuel pump diagram will cause the lower cylinders to load up with fuel and oil. of course that is just a guess.

    The last 140HP IL6 was made in 1978-1979, I believe. It was the same as the Merc 1500, but since Merc introduced a 150HPV6 motor in 1978, they changed the IL6 to 140HP. There were some earlier 140HP IL6 models, say around 1972. As was said, the motor is likely worth very little, say $300.

    Like most IL4 engines, the 3.0L motor doesn't have the good sound or the increased power of the V6. The 3.0Lmotor is entry level for boats in that length, but still better then most entry powerplants. it should power that boat to 35MPH or so. A V6 would add 5-10 MPH. Anyone ride in a 24...
