No power to tilt and trim relays.

Relays supply ground to the PTT motor when they are not energized. They supply +12VDC to the PTT motor when energized. So you must have a good ground on the relay's primary and secondary circuits for it to function properly. So, If you jumper the blue wire on the PTT motor with +12VDC and it...

    wont trim up under load

There are at least 3 different engine models or that year and HP. That unit is likely a single cylinder and can be power or mechanical. The mechanical version of the trim unit is powered by the accumulator. I would recommend to the OP that he match his unit up on the Crowleymarine site or...

Took boat to "marine mechanic" and now it's not drivable

Gee, I thought mechanics loved carb rebuild jobs......easy money.

    Power trim relay

That PTT motor will usually have 3 wires (blue, green. black) a solenoid or maybe 2 solenoids, and no relays. Some had only one solenoid for up and the green wire for "Down trim" was wired directly to the PTT switch. So take a look at your PTT unit. See if it has one or two solenoids...

Merc runs on one tank and starves out at idle on the other tank

You likely have a small air leak in the fuel line from the front tank, that is not common to the rear tank. At idle the air leak starves the engine for fuel. At high RPM, the pump can pump enough fuel, over the air leak. to cover it up.

No power to tilt and trim relays.

What model motor? 60*V6 or 90*V6? So no power at the trim button on the cowling? On my '98 Johnny 60*V6, the power for the instruments, trim, starting etc., come from the same 20A fuse on the wire at the starter solenoid. If that fuse blows, no instruments work, the trim doesn't work and...

    wont trim up under load

You should move this post to the appropriate engine repair section. Some motors do not trim, but have tilt. Some have trim and tilt. What motor do you have?

Tower of Power Cold Start Questions

Yes, fast idle lever all the way up. Be prepared to push it down if engine overspeeds. The starter will kick out whenever 1 cylinder fires. if your motor does this as often as you state, the engine is out of tune. it should only kick out the starter occasionally. Your starting procedure...

    135 Black Max opinions?

That motor is a good one, however, at it's age, a running one would be pretty cheap. I bought that same motor in 2008 for $1k. it runs super. 6 pistons and a bore of the cylinders would be nearly $1k.

1995 mariner 200 hp non efi lost spark

The black/yellow sires will disconnect at the switchboxes. You will need to choke the motor to stop it, after disconnecting those wires.

Mercury 850 Outboard super high Idle

IL4 motors changed to ADI ignition in 1976. The 1975 and earlier models had the distributor ignition.

1995 mariner 200 hp non efi lost spark

Mercury has a low speed and a high speed stator winding. Maybe the high speed winding is bad? Alternatively, Sounds like either the killer wire (black/yellow) is rubbing ground, when you are bouncing around at high speed, or the stator feed to the switchbox is intermittent.

    850 Mercury

Cowling colors are from 1976/77. Remove airbox and top cowling and see if carbs throttle plates open with throttle. Motor will have 2 carbs with linkage between them. If that all works, suspect carbs are dirty or fuel pump is bad. Both can be cleaned and rebuilt cheaply, if you do the work...

Mercury 850 Outboard super high Idle

The trigger is a lever under the flywheel. It is connected by linkage to the carbs. As you move the throttle, the trigger should move also.

My gauge cluster was stolen from me

They all need power and ground. These can come from the same source. The power wires will be fused and are usually on the ignition switch accessory post. The other wires are unique and not fused. Obviously oil pressure and water temperature will come from the engine look for the unique wire...

Took boat to "marine mechanic" and now it's not drivable

A leaking fuel pump diagram will cause the lower cylinders to load up with fuel and oil. of course that is just a guess.

    Mercury tower of power years

The last 140HP IL6 was made in 1978-1979, I believe. It was the same as the Merc 1500, but since Merc introduced a 150HPV6 motor in 1978, they changed the IL6 to 140HP. There were some earlier 140HP IL6 models, say around 1972. As was said, the motor is likely worth very little, say $300.

    Is 90hp ob enough??

Like most IL4 engines, the 3.0L motor doesn't have the good sound or the increased power of the V6. The 3.0Lmotor is entry level for boats in that length, but still better then most entry powerplants. it should power that boat to 35MPH or so. A V6 would add 5-10 MPH. Anyone ride in a 24...
