Proper way to wire a kill switch on Thunderbolt IV

What engine are we discussing? Thunderbolt was the name of ign for OBs and I/Os.

LF 1986 90 HP Mercury L6 Owners Manual

Owners manuals do not have much in them. Save your money for a factory service manual for your engine.

    1979 mercury 140 outboard

You need to set the mixture screws to 1-1/2 turns open from lightly seated. The motor should run at this setting. Warm the engine up and run at idle in gear. Usually that carb setting is too lean to allow acceleration. So try to accelerate. if the motor stalls or fails to rev up, open the...

    1979 mercury 140 outboard

The carbs only have a single adjustment screw. It is about 2PM on the face of the carb. Gee, if you rebuilt the carbs, you should have seen it.

    Proof of value

A marine survey on an old and cheap boat? Really? I would look for a fly-by-night insurance company who would insure it for liability, and call it a day.

4.3 LX Gen+ alpha one Mercruiser tilt trim issue

You might post this in the MerCruiser forum, along with the year of the outdrive. Normally slow operation is caused by dirty electrical cables.

    Choke Wire

You should be able to see the rear of the quick disconnect plug. The wire should be there. There is a couple of bolts and a clamp, and the wiring harness slips out. I would use the OEM part number and do a search on the web. All the aftermarket harnesses are likely made by Sierra or GLM.

    Choke Wire

The choke wire is grey in color. The balance of the wire should be hanging out of the quick disconnect male plug on the inside of the lower cowl. As Scott advises, if the insulation is falling of the harness in general, it is best to replace it. The web will have several sources, with...

    Johnson Engine Backfiring?

You should repost this in the Johnnyrude forum. Those guys/gals will know your engine inside-out. I would guess a timing problem....

    Proof of value

I doubt you will want collision insurance. Can you get liability insurance w/o it's value? FYI Allstate would not insure it at all due to it's age. You can try a kelly blue book or NADA type site. Figure it is worth very little, say $500

1979 1150 thunderbolt merc drive shaft

Mercury gearcases of different years had drive shaft bearings with the taper down as well as up. Some of these had preload pins on the driveshaft. As far as I know the entire gearcase would interchange. I do not know if you could switch bearings between them. You may need to buy a new...

    Year of Manufacture

1975 and earlier 850s had distributor ignition. I do not believe 850 were made after 1979. They were 800s then. The maxrules site will give serial numbers and years. I think they have Canadian serial numbers.

Fuel Tank Contamination (for your information)

Jerry has covered his butt with that answer. Gasohol E10 has been used in much older motors than yours, w/o incident.

Motor and Tilt stopped working - other electronics good

Normally the starter solenoid and the trim/tilt are connected to the battery in the engine harness. A lot of motors have main fuses on that circuit. The boat accessories are fused via a fuse block under the dashboard. Who know how the CMC unit is fused, however, I would be looking for a blown...

    1989 Mariner wire harness extension

Looks like the available harnesses in your year were 12 wire, 10 wire, 9 wire and 7 wire. Each has a part number you should be able to use in your search. Which do you have? https://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/parts/1989_250.cfm

    1989 Mariner wire harness extension

What kind of cable do you have? Those round plugs were pretty universal in Mercs after they phased out the external quick disconnect plug.

1999 Johnson 150 Bogs when warm

Strength of the telltale stream makes no difference. If the thermostats stick closed or don't open enough or soon enough, motor will get hotter than designed, possibly leading to heatstroke.

1999 Johnson 150 Bogs when warm

Thermostat covers are plastic, right? They should not corrode into the block. I broke one of the small hex heads on the cover, but the larger one removed the cover.
