See if she will shift by hand. Prop must be turned to allow this. If not suspect the shift rod is corroded to the cover it passes thru. Replacement is pretty simple. When you drop the gearcase to change the waterpump, you will see the cover and shift rod. Shift rod height must be set exactly...
8gauge wire is much heavier than you would need for a FF. You can use it however. it is more appropriate to use it to power all accessories, current and future.
However, I like to wire in a master accessory switch at the helm, so I can turn all accessories off with one flip. Saved me from a...
The brown wire is likely for an overheat alarm.
Make sure you have +12VD on the purple wire, ign on, and -12VDC on the black wire. A voltmeter or test light can confirm.
Check the grey wire at the motor. it should be connected to one of the yellow stator wires, that come from under the...
An 850 likely has a 2.3::1 gear ratio. Your IL6 gearcase is likely 2::1. So, you may need a new prop pitch to restore top speed.
Make sure to install the plastic piece in the midsection, so it will hold the upper shift shaft in a good place to line up with the lower shift shaft. use needle...
I have never looked for those. You could permanently connect the fuel line to the motor using a brass double hose barb in 5/16" ID from a hardware store, plus a couple of hose clamps or wire ties.
I also would expect the fittings to be available aftermarket, but not sure where..
Gee, what new stuff are you expecting an owners manual to have in it, that a service manual doesn't.
I had an owners manual for a '77 IL6. I cannot think of anytime I consulted it, after I got a service manual.
The right handed prop on your motor wants to "walk" to the right side of the boat. This causes it to pull to starboard.
Loosen the bolt holding the zinc anode and rotate the fin on the anode full CCW, and tighten it. Expect the torque to be different at different trim settings. You can only...
A modern tach needs +12VDC, ground and a signal wire. Look for a cluster of purple, black and grey wires. Purple is +12VDC, black is ground and grey is signal.
If the driveshaft spines have been stripped, the crankshaft would likely turn.
I think either the prop shaft is bent enough to jam the gears or the bearings broke in the gearcase, or the driveshaft is bent enough to jam the crankshaft.
A fuel leak can also let in air, causing loss of fuel for idling. High speed pumps more fuel and may mask it.
Fix the leak and retest. If that doesn't fix it, rebuild fuel pump.
Boy those are some really dumb thieves. How much can they get for a stolen 40 year old motor? They are not smart enough to realize it ain't worth it?
I suppose you need to defend even old stuff from those blitherings..... No one here in NJ would consider buying a 40 year old motor, stolen...
That's crap. Fuel lines, even cheap black ones last a long time. Even after 20 years, I have never had one break, as you described. They guy who said they needed to be replaced every few months is uninformed, or worse.
Find some SAE ones in black.
Sounds like a problem with the gearcase. You must have hit that trap at high RPMs. You should drop the gearcase and see if that frees up the crankshaft.
If so, you probably need a new gearcase (see SEI for replacement) or perhaps a repair. I would check the driveshaft and see if she is...
