The brass fitting that screws into the block is the standard 1/4 NPT. The NPT changes it to the Merc thread which uses the Blue plug or Hradin Marine SS plug

It's possible the the pump has gone bad, the impeller may also be a little stuck. Not all manufactures install a strainer. If your in fresh water many times it's a good thing to have but not needed.

Thinking we need to get it started first. Since it does start and now hard to shift the drive might be damaged.
Pull the drive to see if the cables move smooth with drive off. Then shift the drive and see if it does ok moving the shift foot...
