    check the fuel filter contents for any thing but clean gas . Verify fuel pressure what do your spark plugs look like ? My guess would be rebuild carb, ensure ignition components are good, set timing

    The height of the exhaust riser and elbows above the water line. Typically the boat manufacturer will install an engine such that there is 14-15” from water line to top of the exhaust elbows . This height difference keeps water from backflowing into engine... but it can happen in certain situations

    Check for 12 v at positive side of coil while cranking Look at the kill switch disconnect shift interrupt switch verify that it isn't killing the ignition

    Loosen the Bolts first to make sure you dont break one in the rear transom mounts or have a rotten front stringer where those lags go in. if yiu are trying to go in and out in one day you want to be ahead of any issues

    My thoughts as well or find a hydraulic or forklift repair shop can probably set you up with the right fittings or put new fittings on your hoses.

    Would agree with other comments that a 140 merc is a reliable engine parts available and cheap, also agree a 29 ft pontoon and a 140 you aren't going anywhere fast... it will be underpowered. Doesnt mean it cant provide fun I just think you wont be skiing behind it. Bigger issue is a water pump...

    Main difference would be later engine will have vortec heads roller cam and balance shaft And serpentine belt system. 2008 will make 190/220 hp (2 bbl/4bbl) vs 175/205 for the older one. balancer and flywheel will not swap. Starter alternator and ps pump may swap but you need to look at them...

    When it sputters and dies - take the coil wire off the distributor , ground it , and see if you get spark. Also the crab style MPI distributor caps are known throuble spots have you replaced yours. Have you measured the fuel pressure especially when it dies?

    Ok when it stalls and will not restart have someone pump the throttle forward while you look down the bores of the carb if yiu see two solid streams of gas you likely have fuel in the carb. check for spark take the coil wire off the distributor and ground it see if you get a nice blue spark that...

    Just below where the flame arrestor goes on the carb on the back left side there is a 1/4” nipple that sticks out fir the fuel pump diaphragm rupture overflow tube. Its at about 10 oclock if you look down at the top of the carb

    Mercruiser 3.0 Rebuild or not

    You may have to change the oil 3 times or so to get any milk cleaned out. Buy the cheapest oil you can put only 3 qts in, run it at the dock or on the muffs, keep changing the oil and filter until it stays clean.
