Overhauling my 1988 MerCruiser 4.3 ltr. engine

it is not a sensor should be a tube running in there from the two 1/4” outlets. May be corroded and only have part of the tube left ... Its the connection for the heated choke. old chokes had a pipe in the exhaust passage in the intake manifold That supplied hot air to heated choke coil. Take...

Mercruiser 3.0 reliability and overall maintenance?

Ive had two sea rays a 1991 170, and currently have a 2004 200 sport. I will agree the 04 finishes are less high end than the 91 ( compared to typical lake bowrider) also totally agree that on the smaller boats bayliner has come up in quality signifcantly and searay maybe has come down some (...

    Proper Engine Oil Level

Fill to the dipstick level. No difference between those engines as long as stock oil pan is used. In the unlikley scenario that a higher capacity aftermarket pan is used youd need more oil.

    Proper Engine Oil Level

I ended up the same way on my 5.0 on multiple sites ( other than seloc) I've seen 4.5 qts listed as well as 5.5. This was on a replacement engine i got from michigan motorz they told me 5.5 but their site lists 4.5... Generally i add a gallon and top off maybe a hair more. never have any issue...

Proper maintenance? Good products for maximum performance?

i would pull the drive to inspect the gimbal, bellows, shift linkage, look for rust / leaking gear oil around the input seal to drive , split the drive and do a water pump impeller. Change your fluids oil and gear lube. Go through ignition system plugs wires cap and rotor. If its still points...

    Core return of Mercruiser

if you can do the work yourself you should check out a long block or new base engine from michigan motorz as AD mentions especially if you have a bunch of parts that are worth keeping. I got a partial engine package from them ( new base engine, intake, carb, distributor), itook everything else...

Mercruiser 4.3L pushes 2400# runabout only 36mph max

Yeah the high five was totally disappointing. I had for fun and knowledge base been trying several props over the years. high five was the last one, basically my test order was set by when I found them used on eBay...still have my best results with a revolution 4, enertia was a close second...

Mercruiser 4.3L pushes 2400# runabout only 36mph max

If you haven’t run it with a different prop, I’d second trying another prop. I tried a high five this past summer and got similar results, lots of rpm and boat didn’t go anywhere.

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

I think they make taller corresponding down elbows #17, you could use short sections of hardwall exhaust hose to make your own taller rubber couplers

Overhauling my 1988 MerCruiser 4.3 ltr. engine

Yes you could but I would nit spend the money on them vs std bolts . Stainless can gall easily.

    Winterizing 350 mag?

Just removing the five drain plugs alone will get all the water out.

Omc 4.3? What did i buy?

What you have is a 175 hp 2 bbl engine with rebuilt long block, likely was overheated causing the head gasket blowing. I wouldn’t mess around with it, juice isn’t worth the squeeze. have the heads and block deck checked, take the pan off check the bearings out, plastiguage the clearances. If ok...

Need help selecting new prop - 89 Wellcraft 210 Classic

You mention trying a 4 blade, that really depends on how you use your boat. I have run several 4 blades on my last two boats Because my primary use is loaded (people) water sports-skiing, boarding, tubing. In terms of holeshot, stern lift, and lower planing speed I saw nice improvements. if...

Fuel burn with 5.7 LX mercruiser, 24' Boat

Yes obviously the gaskets and needle and seat are important, I was just trying to reinforce that proper cleaning of the carb is the hardest thing for a home rebuilder to get right. You see lots of posts where people rebuilt the carb and still have carb issues, done it myself...also worth...

Fuel burn with 5.7 LX mercruiser, 24' Boat

I’ve had good luck with mikes carb shop in WA. the kit isn’t going to fix it, properly cleaning the carb body all the passages is where most go wrong, make sure to soak it in cleaner blow all passages out and stick a thin wire through them. I would suspect your idle transition slots are gummed...

Omc 4.3? What did i buy?

I think the flat tappet means the block is an 85-86. Will it work I would think yes but will make less power than a vortex 1996 and up engine. the flywheel size maybe smaller on the older engine may cause a coupler fitment issue. I think in 91 went to a 14” flywheel From 12&5/8” starter is...

Lower Shift Shaft Bushing and Seals Kit??

Yes the drive is an alpha one, but there is a separate serial number for the transom assembly The R, MR, and Alpha ones are direct bolt in swaps for the earlier MC1 drives, so it is possible a later drive can be bolted to an earlier transom assembly. The seal kit mentioned says it fits all mc1...
