    Carburator frustration

Volvo penta used a 4 bbl intake with and adapter to neck down to a 2 bbl. i run a 1409 on my mercruiser it worked well out of the box, i just went with a larger accelerator pump nozzle . I does it idle ok ? I would check your fuel pressure should have around 5-6 psi at wot. also check your...

Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 1 Project

Definitely replace the gimbal given the rust and moisture in the grease. One other way to get water in the bellows is through the shift shaft theres seals where it pivots through the exhaust passage the top one can let water into the bellows if the big square gasket leaks .

    Fuel pressure dropping.

How long does it take for the fuel pressure to drop to zero? One thing that hasnt been mentioned is the fuel tank vent being plugged, but this would take several minutes to start pulling a vacum on the tank. you could test this by blocking off the boat tank and hook an outboard tank to the pump...

    Hydrolocked in the parkinglot

If you have the fin and it is not in need of replacement leave it. Having had both on PS equiped boats over the years I wouldnt swap out one for the other. If you later put a different prop on you can easily trim it to fit. Almost any higher perfromance prop than a black max will require...

Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 1 Project

As mentioned clunk going into gear is correct for a dog clutch style like on the alpha. If it clicks or doesnt fully engage that is more likely shift cable needing replacement, so replacing the drive wont help that. Moog 315 or equivalent is the correct ujoint. I would also replace the ginbal...

How to tell what carb I need?!?

the fact that is an alpha doesn’t matter but you may want to verify the drive Ratio on the off chance someone swapped in a 1.32 ratio off a 454 powered boat.

How to tell what carb I need?!?

Who ever told you that is a 2 bbl is wrong. Thatis a 4 bbl Rochester Quadrajet. good news is properly rebuilt and set up it is a very good carb, dont get fooled by the quadrajunk, quadra bog or other comments you may see. start with the basics check compression, look-at what comes out of the...

Merc Alpha4 no longer available. What to replace it with?

I ran an offshore ( I think they also called it vensura at one point). Worked very well, especially on holeshot for watersports. I had a fair amount of slip with it on the top end and wouldn't stay hooked up with more than 1/4 trim out. The results you outline are exactly the reasons I...

VIDEO Help: Post Texas Freeze Leak

With cracks like that i bet your block is toast too. Look below the manifolds on the sides of the block i suspect you will find similar cracks there. If none visible, before you put any money into any tube up or oil change items, Run it on the hose let it get good and hot. Look for water...

    Hydrolocked in the parkinglot

Yes you likely broke the seal on the plug. i believe there are two set of passages in that part of the drive. One is cooling water through the drive and into the bellhousing and then up to the engine. The other one is the gear lube up from the lower half. Normally these passages are made by...

    Exhaust manifold tap size

Not sure what engine you are working but assuming it is chevy based ...3/8 -16 i believe. A bottom tap helps you get farther into blind holes so i generally buy these when getting a tap

    Hydrolocked in the parkinglot

This is the correct answer i wouldn’t go hammering it as mentioned by OP. Like in a carb there are passages that are drilled after casting that have welch plugs in them to block them off where needed.

VIDEO Help: Post Texas Freeze Leak

Is it worth replacing the motor? Probably if the rest of the boat is in reasonable shape. Cost for a remanufactured long block is about $2500, labor low side =$1500 . So a reman long block all in could be $4-5 k up to $11 k if you get a mercuiser bobtail installed at a dealer with a 3 yr...

How to tell what carb I need?!?

I believe you are correct that the 350 mag should be a 4 bbl, but i think in yiur video it is showing a rochetser Quadra jet which is a 4 bbl. to be honest the video was not too useful as the camera was flopping all over the place . if you post just a close up of the carb and manifold it would...

Mercruiser 3.0 strange sound at low end acceleration

I wonder if it is detonation. Id see if the spark plugs look lean, you can find some photos by goggling how to read spark plugs. If they are looking lean set the ignition timing and check fuel delivery, fuel filter verify fuel pressure and rebuild carb
