    98 4.3L Vortec problem

Only other place to check in addition to where rick said is in the water cross over under the thermostat, but that wont help you if no draining was done.i think there is separate plug in the front of the intake on 4.3 s that can get missed if the restof the engine was properly drained

    1990 Mercruiser 350 Inboard Issues

yeah i figured 30 was total advance as i doubt it would run even ok if you were that far off. traditionally you set base or initial timing then as long as advance system ( mechanical or electronic) works you are ok. Its always good to verify total advance is ok, typical marine is 26-30 degrees...

    4.3 Mercruiser cold start issues

I find the same issue with my edlebrock 1409 as well given common lineage between the carter, Weber and edlebrock carbs I think you will Not see improvement

    Back again

Generally on a used engine it is not advisable to add closed cooling as sediment and corrosion will be present in the engine block and likely to clog the small passages in the heat exchanger. If I recall you are considering a 3.0 it is one of the most accessible engines in terms of oil filter...

    4.3 Mercruiser cold start issues

The difference between a boat and a car if you have a fuel leak in a car the fuel and any fuel vapors only goes out on the ground, in a boat they get trapped in the bilge of the boat So there is more fire and explosion potential in a marine application. This is the main reason both fuel and...

    Back again

Happy wife happy life...i like the swim platform on our sea ray 200. Our kids and their friends camp out on it. Im used to maintaining my IO wouldn’t have it any other way. All depends on how you want to use it.

    1990 Mercruiser 350 Inboard Issues

if it doesn't start or at least cough on starting fluid you don't have spark. Check your timing and use a spark gap tester to test the strength of the spark. I would go through the ignition components, ohm out the coil since its seems to not run after getting hot. if it happens again when it...

    3.0 L lifter worn

Yes I would replace both the cam and lifters would also check the valves are moving ok would think this is the result of lack of lubrication or sticking valve

    Back again

The biggest reason to get an IO over an outboard is having the entire transom free for the swim platform. Unless you are in salt water that would tip me the way of the IO. you are in a totally diffferent price and age bracket vs the last boat you had. With youyr mentioned mechanical skills you...

    What am I missing here?

Dont think you are missing anything thrust washer on the drive will have a-ridge that fits in the lip inside the prop.yiu may have to knock the thrust washer off your old drive , it worked last year so must have had all the pieces there. i also have a hub like that is bell shaped

    Mercarb TKS Replacement Carburetor Identification

If it is for that application it should work just fine. You need to wire up a 12 v supply off the purple ignition circut . I thin this is the same one that supplies 12 v power to the fuel pump and ignition when the key is in run position . Double check where the fuel inlet is some are on the...

    Fired up today...

I think in general the 4.3s take less advance than the v8s vortec and pre vortec. I think the vortec 4.3 that i pulled out of my boat was like 8 initial 24 total.

    Fired up today...

and Im still going to keep pestering you until you check it ... seriously by 5 degrees i assume you mean inital timing? I don't recall which engine/ ignition you have, but would assume it should be either 8 or 10 degrees. Any less initial timing will reduce total advance at higher rpm 3-5...

You need the wiring harness and ecu, ignition module on carbed motors. The engine needs ti be a complete bobtail regardless of cofniguration ( carb, tbi, or mpi) not just a long block.the ad the op showed looks to have a wiring harnes etc so should be relatively easy to run.

Replacement motor going in ,need opinions

Good to hear, the fuel pump should be handled within the existing wiring harness so i was confused by the mechanics comment. Hopefully it work$$ out Ok.

Yes pretty easy to run out of the boat, if it runs and has good compression its worth more. if not pay less. Bottom line its a 40 year old engine probably not in great demand. Says it needs a tune up only... if that cant be demonstrated its only a core....

    1983 Mercruiser Sterndrive - R

As mentioned clean it out then pressure test to find leaks. Given the age of the drive i would suspect it is due for a complete seal replacement. Given moisture intrusion you want to check bearings fir signs if corrosion and wear

165 in the add will be a bolt in replacement. Best to run it on the ground if possible. confusingly merc also had a 3.7 l 4 cylinder 165 hp as well.

    out drive gear lube

It will just come out the reservoir, not the same situation as overfilling oil in an engine crabkcase.
