    out drive gear lube

It should completely drain the reservoir out the bottom plug. If it really didnt drain there is probably some debris in there or in the hose back to the outdrive. when i refill just pump from the bottom up until you see lube coming up in the bottle. At this point i would let it idle on the muffs...

    Starfire

This is good advice if you enjoy doing some work on it go for it at price mentioned. If you really like the boat long term consider repowering it with the engine and outdrive from a newer parts boat. Would be an easy swap (as far as swaps go) to put in a 5.7 merc with an alpha outdrive.

    OEM or Aftermarket

Bellows and water pump impellers general consensus is oem is better. On my old boat alpha one gen one, the merc impellers lasted twice as long as the sierra ones

    Surge brake

Generally I’d use dot3 for an existing system it may say in the manufacturers requirements or on the master cylinder in the coupler

    1998 3.0 limited RPM

The mph makes sense for thats size boat, id expect 38 mph or so. Id cross check the tach with a shop tach as they sometimes go bad. Agree with bondo if it is accurate go down to 17” pitch. I would think you could swing a 19” pitch on that set up up to 4400-4600.

    Engine struggles to turn over

If you take the spark plugs out you should be able to turn the engine by hand at the balancer pulley. If this turns easily and it wont turn over correct the elecrical issues wether they are battery cable or starter related. if you cant turn it easily I would pull the drive and see if it frees up

    Engine struggles to turn over

I would measure the fuel pressure before replacing the pump. Since it starts on starting fluid the timing must be reasonably close. If you replaced the cables go back and recheck they are tight. I assume the battery is in good conditon? if you still cant get it to turn over may want to look at...

Mercruiser Pre-Alpha (EZ Shift or MC1) shifting issue

I think with the drive put back on the boat you should be able to disconnect the lower shift cable in the engine compartment and shift it by hand should easily slide in and out of gear with two fingers. while you have the drive off try it if ok reinstall the drive and try again. This will...

MerCarb adjusting after rebuild and question about base gasket

I cant explain it but my 1990 3.0 with mercarb had a two hole gasket and no spacer... but there was one large hole in manifold. Both gaskets came in my rebuild kit i could not get it to idle correctly with the single hoke gasket. Two hole gasket worked fine. It made no sense to me but clearly...

MerCarb adjusting after rebuild and question about base gasket

My mercarb used the two hole gasket. You can tune it without a vacuum gauge. I usually start with the idle mix screw out about a turn and a half. Turn it in (lean) until it starts stumbling, then turn it out (rich) until it stumbles. Usually setting it between these is best idle setting. once...

Sounds like with your comments here and the performance numbers Bobdo shared, your plan of putting the 4.3 in will meet your needs well.

    75 Holiday Repower

I think you will see a noticeable difference in power. Im not sure whatyour expectations are but at 22 ft you could go the next step up to a 5.7 If you really want it to be quick. what year is the 4.3? 96 and later is the votecs and should be good for 220 hp Witha 4 bbl carb

    Alpha1 Gen2 outdrive ratio question

I would think if you buy the 1.47 ratio drive and get a prop 2" lower pitch you will have about the same rpm and performance that you do now assuming it is properly pitched and hitting the correct WOT RPM. I repowered a 4.3 V6 boat (21 ft searay bowrider) with a 5.0 carbed engine, kept the...

    Prop Suggestions

I had a simlar size searay 170 with 3.0 and had good luck with 4 blade Michigan Vortex Props (they make both a 3 and 4 blade vortex). I demoed a 16" pitch and 18" ended up buying both used the 18" for general cruising/tubing and 16" for skiing and wakeboarding. Big difference in holeshot, stern...

    Bad carb

Not really. I think the $350 is not for an oem mercarb but an aftermarket bolt in replacement like sierra sells? other option if you want a turn key is to buy one rebuilt https://flyingfishcarburetors.com/Marine-Boat-merCruiser-Rochester-OMC.htm#merc your carb number is listed partway down the...

Merc Alpha4 no longer available. What to replace it with?

Rev 4 pitch is 21”. the spitfire 23” is right at the rev limiter so i would have been over with a smaller pitch. compared to the sales pitch in the merc literature i gotta say the spitfire wasn't impressive. I have a 1.81 drive as my boat was originally a 4.3 powered boat that i repowered with...
