    1998 Volvo Penta 4.3L GL

Michigan Motorz has both remanufactured and new base engines in that budget range. But you can save some money if you have a local engine machine shop who knows what they are doing

No spark plug spark... 170 MC , 1985 Sea Ray

this tells you your points aren’t properly adjusted or working. When you manually short them out like this you are doing what should happen when the rubbing block opens the points then they close. Likely you have measured the open gap, but they are not closing fully Which shorts to ground and...

    Output shaft slop

You’re fine those splines look great, no wear at all. the u joint end you are rocking is supported by being in the gimbal bearing when installed and properly aligned in the boat.

No spark plug spark... 170 MC , 1985 Sea Ray

Don’t buy another coil you‘ve tried two, or at least ohm out the primary and secondary sides to verify if it is bad, google it you’ll find some ohm specs after reading through the only things left are the condenser and setting the points with a dwell meter . Willing to betif you are getting...

Crud in carburetor, is it a problem?

That’s a good list I’ve also used starter fluid sprayed at gasket joints like carb base and intake to head. for testing fuel pressure I’ve seen Ts that thread into the flare fitting on the carb and have a female flare for the fuel line sandwiches in between line and carb points to if firing...

Volvo Penta SX-M drive Gimbal bearing obliterated and Gimbal Bearing Housing damaged

Best bet looked for a used fresh water gimbal housing or complete transom take out. You have to pull the engine to replace this. If there was no gasket in there seller knew this was damaged and in need of a fairly expensive repair, slapped it back together. The rest of the bearing is missing...

No spark plug spark... 170 MC , 1985 Sea Ray

Do you have the connection from the cap down onto the rotor? May be missing if you have a spark off the coil to ground- good consistent blue spark, then the issue is in cap rotor or plug wires

Crud in carburetor, is it a problem?

In addition to what Rick mentioned . Can you measure fuel pressure at the carb at or close to wot rpm? wonder if carb bowl is empty I wouldn’t run it too much or too hard if it is detonating you will beat up your pistons. when you rebuilt the carb did u replace the power valve and did the...

    No spark 4.3 Mercruiser

Ok must have missed that in the thread , jumper it out it should run guage and switch are off different sources. there is a round sender often on a t with the switch has a single wire on it this is what sends the signal to the gauge

    No spark 4.3 Mercruiser

if there is no power on the purple supplying the switch you won’t get anything downstream of it... you can test it two ways, not that it’s an expensive part- put a jumper wire across the two terminals in the wiring harness. use an ohm meter to see if there is continuity when the engine is...

    MerCruiser 120 1968 2.5 not idling tight

possible if there was grit in there that it was not pumping properly And starving the carb for fuel.

    No spark 4.3 Mercruiser

Look at the wiring diagram black is always ground, or the negative side of a 12 v system. the fuel pump gets the positive 12 v from the purple yellow wire from two different ways off the starter during cranking when 12 v positive is supplied to the oil pressure (ignition switch is in run...

    MerCruiser 120 1968 2.5 not idling tight

Not sure what you meant as auto correct took over. But yes if there is debris in the fuel system to have to clean it out. You may have a situation where debris was in your tank clogged the carb. You rebuilt the carb which is now plugged as the fuel system keeps feeding debris into it. On a boat...

    No spark 4.3 Mercruiser

Sounds like your switch is bad if oil is coming out of it. Temporarily you can put a jumper wire in the connection to bypass it If need be.

    MerCruiser 120 1968 2.5 not idling tight

In addition to Scott’s comments Check fir vacuum leaks not only at carb base but if I recall the intake on these older had a split casting top with a gasket on it . May be loose or need new gaskets if not done. the fact that it ran well after carb rebuild makes me think maybe a bolt loosened up...

How to remove engine from 1987 Starcraft Islander 221V

Is there a beam up there likely you can use what’s there already. If you want to get slick put a small I beam (4” -6”deep maybe 8 ft long) and a trolly with a chain Fall so you can slid the engine back and drop it. Would think youd be around 550 lbs dressed on that engine - block us aluminum .

How to remove engine from 1987 Starcraft Islander 221V

Call a towing company will probably cost you like $75 or 100 each way but worth it imho. When I did mine I looked at building an a frame was like $100 worth of lumber. ultimatley I got a favor from the rigger we use at work he brought a small crane saved so much screwing around and was so much...
