    run the motor from a separate portable fuel tank after you clean the carb. by clean, not talking an exterior spray of carb cleaner, however taking it apart, cleaning all the passages and verifying they are clear by passing fishing line thru them prior to installing a new gasket set.

    unless he is using a gap-style spark tester that shows a spark jumping a 3/8" spark, he is most likely using the cheap little one that simply has a light that lights up. the OP may not be getting a good spark. the little light-up spark testers will fire at as little as 5000 volts. dwell time...

    you will be fine with 8 gauge wire. the bluesea systems amp to length ratio chart is linked below https://www.bluesea.com/resources/1437 Most standard outboard control harnesses only run 14 gauge to the dash. some run 16 gauge.

    if dwell is not properly set, timing cant properly be set with points. no money is even spent on setting points. just 5 minutes of time to get the beer, dwell meter, screw drive and remote start button
