    Post the compression values taken today.-----Inspect reed valves.----Take carburetor apart and post pictures of all the gaskets / parts.-----Stop running this motor until you sort out the issue.

    Nobody can see what you are doing.----That is why we ask questions.----I have never had an issue getting one of the crankcases apart.----Have done more than one !

    Is the tapered dowel pin out ?-------Is the carburetor and intake manifold off ??-----Is the lower seal housing off ?

    Stop running this motor.-----You have to make sure that carburetors are working properly.------If there is an issue / blockage then you risk starving a cylinder of fuel and OIL !

    Agreed.-----Compression test first.---Post your numbers.-----Water pump maintained ?----Overheat horn tested.-----Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" or more on a test device ?

    There is a mark on the cam.----That is the point where throttle plate opens.----At idle there usually is a gap between follower and cam.-----If throttle plate is open it will not idle properly.

    These Mercury oil injection systems are driven by a plastic / nylon gear on the crankshaft.-----I have seen that gear stripped.

    There is more than one reed valve for each crankcase.----There are 4 reed valves for the top cyinder and 4 reed valves for the bottom cylinder.

    There may not be a thermostat in the 4 cylinder " classic " motors.-----Pictures or serial # of this motor ?

    Put a few drops of fuel into each cylinder.----Put plugs back in.----Pull it over.-----Should bark / roar like a mad dog or lion.----If not try reversing plug leads.-----I say it is a timing issue.-----But you state that flywheel key has been verified good.

    The factory plastic tubes only serve one purpose.----They help guide the copper tubes into the pump.-----Once assembled those 2 short plastic tubes do nothing !

    The rubber tube is the oil recirculation line.----Most motors use oil recirculation.----Some you can see and on some motors there is an internal passage way.

    The 85 model appears to use the same lower unit as was used in the V-6.----The 83 model uses the V-4 lower unit.----It will fit.----Shift rod from the 85 has to be installed in the 83 lower unit.---Your location ?
