    Some motors have the spline that is open to the crankcase.------Those do need the o-ring to seal crankcase compression !

    The ---EC-----makes it a 1998 model.----The last production year of these crossflow motors.----This motor does not show the big red plug on the wiring harness.----That was last used in 1995.-----You might want to ask this MEKANIK on some facts on these repair kits as they are the same from 1980...

    Remove cowling.----Remove 4 wee screws and remove cover on carburetor airbox / silencer.-----Pull choke on.----Visually check and see if choke flapper is closed.----Pull cord once and see if choke remains closed.

    Some trouble shooting needs to be done.-----Sounds like somebody had issues with the motor and sold it.----So before you start adjusting and guessing.----Do a compression test.-----Do a spark test.----Check valve clearance.----No beer tokens to spend doing some testing here.

    They marketed a 4 cylinder 65 HP up to 1971.----Then came out with the less than robust 3 cylinder 650 in 1972.

    Very nice find.-----Perhaps install a new water pump impeller.------These were the first generation of 4 strokes when 2 stroke was the popular thing.-----How times change.-----Use ---google ---to find parts for that machine.

    You need a new impeller.------Your motor does not have a warning or shutdown system should it overheat.-----It would keep running until you notice it slowing down.----Then you would be looking at expensive repairs or another motor.

    Switch the 2 shift wires.------I think they are not right at this time.-----And no switching them has no risk of doing any damage.

    Compression test results needed.----Did you replace water pump impeller ?----Mixing gas and oil at 50:1 ratio ?

    Those motors will idle nicely if in good condition.----Is the throttle plate closed at idle ?-----Is that stop on the metal rod ( ~12" long ) set properly ?----Clearly something is wrong if motor does not respond to low speed mixture adjustment.---How did this motor run for you last year ?

    Nothing to do with prop pitch I think.----I say there is an issue in the carburetor.----Idle passage ways are very small , like tiny.----Clean the carburetor again.

    Now we are getting somewhere.--But the 1980 model was a 7.5 HP !-----The proper identification helps.----Maybe the shifter pin fell out of the propshaft when you were not looking.

    I tested my boat one time.-----115 HP.------19" pitch prop ---54 miles / hr and 5800 RPM.-----21" pitch ---54 miles / hr and 5400 RPM.----23" pitch ----54 miles / hr and 4800 RPM.-----Boat speed was the same.----All testing done one after the other.

    A common mistake when testing in a bucket is not enough water.----Water must be 6 or 8" above the pump.----Thermostat has nothing to do with the tell tale.
