Town to live in near (or on) LBL (Land Between the Lakes) in Kentucky or TN?

My wife and I are considering a move out to the LBL region and I'm wondering if anyone here either lives there or goes there often enough to give a recommendation for an area to live/work? We're both white collar workers, so somewhere commutable to a good sized town is best, but far enough away...

Engine mount placement for 3.0L - How far from transom?

So, I have my boat all apart and am at the rebuilding stage. I am almost where I need to glass the engine mount back in.. but I have no idea where it goes  Is there some measurement I can use to find out exactly where to put it? Say, 32 inches forward of the inside edge of lowest...

TUTORIAL: Fiberglass mat too thick? Thin it out!

I bought a giant roll of what I think is 2oz mat off ebay (it was an ad for 1.5oz, but it is really thick, but I digress..) and I have been dreading using it on my upcoming deck replacement, as it will soak up gallons and gallons of resin. Not needing my deck to double as a bomb shelter, I began...

Lower shift cable tool - How to make your own

UPDATE - Instructions added below! Okay, so I ordered up a lower shift cable, since I know mine is toast (or close to it). I also noticed there is a tool which supposedly makes it easier to remove/install which costs $30. Seeing as the photo make it look like a piece of square tube welded to...

    A boat restoration riddle

I have two dogs. They enjoy being around me whatever I am doing. They walk with me as I do yard work. They lay at my feet when I am at the table. My poor dogs have been itching a bunch recently and I have been clueless as to why. My wife comes into the garage last night and mentions how the dogs...

Anyone live aboard full-time? Would you?

I am reading a book titled "All in the same boat", in which a man has a liveaboard and literally sails everywhere and sold all of his shoreside belongings. I'm wondering, is there anyone on here who has taken this route? I don't mean mooring in a marina with a houseboat which never moves. I...

Can you use a Gen 2 outdrive in place of a Gen 1?

I have a Gen 1 Alpha ('90 bayliner capri 3.0l) and someone on CL is selling a complete Gen 2 outdrive (upper and lower, no gimbal housing). Are the two compatible? Is one preferred over the other? The price is practically free, so I'd be tempted to buy this one as a backup for my current one.

Is there a Craigslist type site for guns?

I'd like to buy a few more guns and am having a hard time finding a site for guntraders. Is there a craigslist type site for gun trading? I just can't get myself to walk into one of those 'pawn and guns' places.

    What wood router to buy?

I am getting to the point in my woodworking hobbies that I would like to have a router. I am trying to stay low budget, so anything under $120 is best. What are my options? Is the 2.5HP harbor freight model enough for general purpose use? HF also has a 1.75HP model already installed on a bench...

Custom made oars - a fun side project

Quote from aqnother thread: This got me thinking.. I've never considered making my own oars! That sounds like fun! Has anyone else made their own oars? What type of wood works best? Ash, maple? I figure it can't be much different than making a baseball bat, just flatter. I know they only...

Jerk neighbors - what to do?

Let me begin with saying I have an awesome oasis of a property. I spend 99% of my time here because it has everything I want. I have a pool, a garage, a privacy fence surrounding me and a great screen porch to chill in. Enter my jerk neighbors... One side has a dog which they let stand on a...

Sail boat recommendation? Used to have 16' o'day

I am looking for a modern equivalent to a 16 foot Oday we used to have when I was a kid. It was a no-frills, no cabin (just storage), fiberglass sailboat that seated roughly 6 adults snug and had a centerboard (keel?) you could raise for shallow water. What makes/models should I look for as a...

Tablet PCs - Anyone use one?

Hey all, I'm wondering how many of us boat crazies also have/use a tablet PC for hobby stuff? I just ordered one up (the HP tx2z, which seems nice) because the lure of being able to literally draw what I'm thinking and save it, email it or modify it later sounds too good to be true to me. There...
