    Remove gearcase.----put gearcase in neutral.----put control in neutral.---adjust the barrel.-----install gearcase.

    I would remove lower unit.------Put lower unit in neutral.-----Put linkage on motor to NEUTRAL.-----Then re-assemble and adjust shift cable.-----Sounds like the splines between lower unit and upper shift rod have been out by one for a while.

    What was the ohm reading on the starter armature?------Should read infinity.

    Cardboard is a bit of a joke for the tool.----I have used 2 kitchen knives to hold brushes in place while lowering the starter assembly.----And there is a proper tool for the job as well , if you do a lot of these.

    Reverse gear should fall out.------Then remove the nut on the bottom of driveshaft.----Remove driveshaft.----Push shift rod to reverse.--Remove shift rod by turning it out.-----If shift mechanism does NOT go all the way down the propshaft assembly may not pull out.

    In my opinion , there is nothing hard about installing the brushes.

    I have the brushes on hand.----Picked up from local starter shop.-$6.00 a set.----Compared to $30 from other places.----These starter are so easy to check out !!
