    Spark Plug Wires

Outboards aren't supposed to use resistor plug wires are they? (Specific engine I'm troubleshooting is '90 Johnson 200)

timing question (Joe Reeves WOT method)

I've adjusted throttle linkage and timing cam roller etc. per my factory manual (1990 Johnson 200). Since I don't have access to a test prop I'm going to use Joe Reeves method from the top secret files for setting timing - looks simple enough. One question - after I get WOT timing set I just...

Mystery hose on 1990 Johnson 200

I bought this engine on ebay, now I'm trying to undo all the redneck engineering from previous owners (and there's been a lot). I pulled the carb bodies to install rebuild kits and found what looks like another example of someone's handiwork, but darned if I know what this hose is supposed to...

    Johnson 200 carb adjustment

I've got a bit of a Frankenstein engine, 1990 Johnson 200 VJ200SLESE. Unfortunately it has '94 carbs on it (they have an idle adjustment needle valve, '90 carbs aren't adjustable). Can someone give me a quick rundown on the adjusting procedure and an initial starting point? (I have a 1990...

'90 Johnson 200 Cooling System - Expert Advise Needed

This problem is getting very strange. I suspect it's probably got something to do with some redneck engineering by a previous owner, but darned if I can figure it out. I'm hoping one of the experts on iboats can help. I ran this engine for the first time a couple of weeks ago on the lake...

    How warm is hot????

'90 Johnson 200. I found this engine on ebay, had it out for the first time a couple of weeks ago and it overheated after about 10 minutes (water pump was new and water pressure was good). Neither thermostat seemed to work properly when placed in hot water. There was a fair amount of crud on...

Differences between OMC & Mercury outboard prop hubs?

Does anyone have a link to a tutorial on the differences between OMC and Mercury prop hubs, what it takes to convert one to the other, etc. Reason I'm asking is I'm looking for a better prop for the '79 Checkmate I just finished rebuilding, and most of the props other Checkmate owners are...

    OMC V6 gearcase assembly question

The older V6 gearcase (with the snap rings) has a retainer plate which the propshaft bearing housing bolts to. The retainer plate has 4 threaded holes, plus a 5th hole - does it matter if that 5th hole is up, down, or to the side? (Also, if anyone knows, what's that 5th hole for?)

Snap Ring Pliers - V6 gearcase disassembly

I need to remove the snap rings from a V6 gearcase (the ones behind the prop bearing carrier). I've got one set of snap ring pliers that's too small for this task, so I'm looking for something that'll get the job done without costing an arm and a leg (I hate spending $80 on a tool I'll use one...

    V6 gearcase parts compatability

I've got two bad V6 lower units. One appears to be a '96 or newer based on the water pickup. The older one has the snap-ring behind the prop shaft bearing housing, the newer one does not. What I plan to do is move the driveshaft, pinion, clutch dog, forward and reverse gears, and prop shaft...

    Thermostat and aspirator questions - '90 J200

I test ran a new-to-me 1990 Johnson 200 for the first time this week. After 10 or 15 minutes the overheat alarm sounded, so I immediately idled back to the dock and put the boat on the trailer (the alarm turned off after a couple minutes of idling). This engine has a brand new water pump, and...

    1990 Johnson 200 - "normal" compression numbers?

I took a new to me '90 Johnson 200 out for the first time yesterday and it didn't run well at all. To top it off the overheat alarm sounded after 15 minutes so I idled back to the dock and put the boat on the trailer (the alarm stopped after a couple minutes of idling). It has a brand new...

    Force on tow rope

Surely in the course of designing and testing ski pylons and wakeboard towers someone has measured the force a skier or wakeboarder exerts on a tow rope. Anybody here ever seen data on this? I'm mostly just curious, but just in case I decide to build a tower in the future I'd like to have an...

    Lightning

I witnessed a lightning strike yesterday that's a big reminder about how unpredictable lightning can be. You often hear that many lightning hits occur before the main part of a storm arrives, but how many of us will stay on a lake and not seek shelter until it's pouring down rain? Yesterday...

Primer Solenoid Lever Position - '90 Johnson 200

Hopefully this is an easy one. I bought a '90 Johnson 200 last year for a boat I'm rebuilding and am FINALLY ready for some test runs :D . I have the factory service manual and it's not mentioned in there - is the lever on the primer solenoid supposed to be down to run or horizontal to run?

    Johnson V6 identification

The engine I THINK I own is a 1990 Johnson 200 (VJ200SLESE). However, I'm starting to wonder. It's apparent that this is a bit of a Frankenstein engine, in fact the guy that sold it to me said he thinks the powerhead is a factory reman. When I reinstalled the lower unit I was careful to set...

Thrust washer for OMC Renegade prop

I found a Renegade Bass prop ( 13-1/2 X 25 p/n 175738) on ebay based on the recomendation of someone who has the same boat and engine (1990 Johnson 200) as me. It doesn't fit my existing thrust washer, which has an OD of 2-7/8 and diameter of shoulder is about 2-1/2. As best as I can tell...

Lower Unit Problem (or not - ?)

I seem to be the hero in a never ending saga of lower unit problems. I'm restoring a Checkmate and bought a '90 Johnson 200 on ebay for it. Turns out the lower unit was trash, it had cracks around the driveshaft bearing holder along with a couple of bolts broken off. Then there was the lower...

    Intermittent ignition(?) problem

'81 Johnson 90. On rare occasion it will lose power and run rough, but not real rough - it seems to me that it's probably running on 3 cylinders when it's doing this. It only happens for 30 seconds to a minute at a stretch, and not all that often - maybe once in 3 or 4 outings. I've checked...

    Shift rod swap

I have a lower unit from a '78 Johnson V6. As far as I can tell the only thing keeping it from working on newer engines (1990) is the shift rod. Is it possible to swap the shift rod with a newer one, and if so how? thanks
