    EVC warning

Hi. I have a 2008 VP 4.3Gxi-jf and it started to give me warnings as "WARNING, check EVC system". Operator manual says you should stop the engine immediately (which I only read later, since I had to come back to marina). Manual also suggests restart the engine, which I also tried several...

    Maskin tape for bottom painting

Going to bottom paint completely new hull bottom. So I got it all figured out regarding which primer and how many coats and what grit sandpaper to use etc etc. However, one thing is a bit fuzzy still - do you change the masking tape between sanding the gelcoat and painting? Odds are that the...

    Understanding Volvo Penta U-joints

According to my VP manual the normal operating trim range is +/- 6 degrees. Above that range the rpm's should be lowered otherwise there will be too much stress on the U joint. On some other place I found that the drive movement range from side to side is +/- 28 degrees...but not a word about...

    Neutral safety switch

Does anyone know if the Volvo Penta remotes have so called neutral safety switch? I have a 2007 4.3GXi with EVC and so on but I haven't ever tried if it doesn't crank if you turn ignition while in gear? If it has such a feature, could anyone share what the wire looks like behind the handle?

    VP 4.3Gxi-jf heat exchanger

I have discovered that the heat exchanger lower end cap seal has failed. Unfortunately I have no idea as to how this has happened, I havent touched it so probably the shop has overtighten it or something...maybe years ago already. anyway, this is how it looks, so clearly it needs to be replaced...

Adding hot water heater to VP 4.3 GXi

I'm thinking of adding a hot water shower to the transom of my boat. Obviously that means adding water heater one way or another. The boat is equipped with 4.3 GXi with closed cooling. There is already defroster added to the boat - T-joint made to coolant reserv tube and other end to engine...

    DPS-A loose tubing

Got the boat back from workshop - and a small piece of tubing looks like this. Can't imagine it to withstand any speed over couple knots. What is it and what should I do with it, tuck it into the opening somehow?

Boat support points for winter storage

I've been wondering about how to build the boat stands for winter storage. Typical set up that you see is the boat is supported by a stack of wood blocks under the keel in the bow and two support points in the stern. However, would it be correct to place the stands under the chines in the stern...

Volvo Penta coolant freeze point vs. burst temp

Hi, I have purchased 40/60 ready-mixed Volvo Penta green coolant. The package says it's freeze point is -13F. However, since I have a closed cooling type of engine I'm now wondering if it's good to leave it in during the winter since temperatures in my area can go as low as -30F (rarely, but...

Volvo Penta 4.3 GXi-JF closed cooling draining

Hi. I'm preparing to winterize my boat that has a VP 4.3 GXi-JF engine from 2008. Since the pictures of the manual that came with the boat and actual engine look a bit different I'm hoping to get some help from discussion here. To the raw water side I will just hook up a canister of AF on the...

Epoxy primer cure time before immersion

Any suggestions, what could be a typical cure time of epoxy primer before immersed in water? The datasheet is missing that info, instead there are dry times in regards to dust dry, touch dry etc.

    Mercury engine data values

I have equipped my Mercury 115 efi with SC1000 speedo and tacho. Including many other things it shows oil temp, oil pressure, water pressure, fuel pressure etc....all kind of temperatures and pressures, all very nice. Except that there is nothing to compare those figures with. None of the...

    Boat hull drying before painting?

The plan is to keep the boat in the water for the season, however the workshops around me are saying that due to workload the wait for the bottom paint (epoxy + antifouling) job is nearly 8 weeks. The water is still cold so without bottompaint Im not really afraid of the marine growth, but the...

    Problem after repowering

I have recently repowered my boat with Merc F115EXLPT EFI with all the smartcraft instrumentation and so on. The height of the mounting has been done exactly how the installation guide says and how all the recommendations in the internet are suggesting. However, the problem is that I can only...

    Gelcoat crack patterns

Hi, I have an odd-looking 6...7 inch gelcoat crack under my new boat. There are no visible marks of some collision and I have run the boat only on deep waters...it's couple of weeks old only so I'm not missing maybe something years and years back. So it can only be something from inside - a...

    Interior gelcoat cracks

Hi all I was wondering if someone could give me a hint or an explanation as to what would be the cause of gelcoat cracks in the corners of steps. It is a small 20ft daycruiser with three steps. I would assume that the cracks have developed due to stepping on them countless times but then again...

    Hull to deck joint (transom)

Hi, I've found a boat with a problem at deck to hull joint. As you can see from the pictures, there seems to be a separation between the joint. Weirdly enough, it appears to be be on either side of the engine mount but the two cracks are separate, meaning that there is no crack/separation right...

    Standard or modified prop?

Hi, Does anyone have a clue whether the prop on the picture is a manufacturers standard or self-modified to hide a possible collision. It is attached to a Yamaha 115 but unfortunately I can't find any manufacturer code or anything. As you can see, the tips of the blades seem to be cut or are...

Not all wood stringers are the same?

Just recently I have found an article in the web (apparently written by some boat surveyor, can't find it anymore) who in a way implied that wood in a stringer can be used for two different reasons - short take of it would be something like if your glassed wood stringers are thin looking (some...
