Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

Jim, If your engine is like my Johnny 150HPV6, the Waterpump consists of (in order from bottom) a gasket, stainless wearplate, Impeller w/ oring, plastic pump upper w/ Oring, plastic water tube w/a seal. All should be replaced as a maintenance item. Don't forget the gasket sealer, silicone to...

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

A complete replacement of the waterpump is a normal maint. item. Your waterpump upper is pretty rough. Much rougher that any ones I have replaced.

    How to Run on stand

A lot of OB charging systems need a battery attached so the diodes in the voltage regulator don't blow or short. So when wiring up power to the ECU, also make sure the voltage regulator has power on the charging wire as well.

Power trim stalling motor (hpdi )

Gee, the helm mounted PTT switch powers the relays that power the PTT motor. I think the relays take about 3ADC. It certainly is not much more than that, although it is apparently enough to affect the engine running. The PTT functions fine from the motor mounted switch, which uses the same...

Mercury Tempest, Turning Point Mach 3 or Michigan Wheel Apollo?

On the Sharrow, the best performance review I saw, which is likely lies, showed the Sharrow to be a few percent better than std SS props. At $2500+ and custom made, the Sharrow needs to be a lot better than the Eneria and the others for it to make sense to me.

Power trim stalling motor (hpdi )

Gee, I was trying to help him find the source of the voltage drop that affects the running of the engine. HDPI engines use lots of power for fuel injection and ignition. When the voltage drops, bad things happen.

oil pump location on 90hp 2000 model merc

#18 is usually driven by a gear on the crankshaft. I do not know if they are removeable. Also, on some models, the crankshaft gear is plastic, and subject to damage. I am not sure what your model has.

Power trim stalling motor (hpdi )

The PTT switch on the motor is likely powered directly from the starter solenoid on the engine. About 2' of wire which is pretty well protected from the elements and accessible for inspection. The control mounted PTT switch is powered by the boat harness positive wire, or perhaps a dedicated...

oil pump location on 90hp 2000 model merc

Oil Injection on 2 cycle carb or EFI outboard engines is done justbefore the fuel hits the carbs or injectors. Trace your fuel line out of the fuel pump, and before it gets to the carbs, you should see a tee, where the oil is pumped into the fuel line containing gasoline. See diagram. Part...

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

You can usually test the spark timing with all but one of the spark plugs removed, and a timing light on the remaining spark plug, in the top cylinder. Joe Reeves was an iBoats member who worked at OMC for a long time and published a timing procedure for OMC products that doesn't require their...

How to kill mold on billge/engine surfaces

Gee, Straight bleach has never failed me and usually overperforms. I use any generic bleach I can get for a good price. Stronger bleach/chlorine is not necessary in my experience. Exercise caution when using any chlorine product. Remember the first poison gas used in WWI was Chlorine...

    Lowe 185 Ski & Fish with Verado 150 – bow won’t lift

I saw that in the photo. They way it looks in the picture is that it will direct water flowing over it, down, causing the bow to plow somewhat. I don't think it alone is responsible for the bow plowing, however. The strait edge test should tell the tale.

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

So it cranks well with the spark turned off, but when spark is on, she won't crank well? I would check the spark timing. If too advanced, it can overpower cranking, when the spark plug fires too soon.

I presume you have a V8 SBC in that boat?

How to kill mold on billge/engine surfaces

Bleach kills mold mildew and lots of other stuff. If using on fiberglass, you can use it full strength. If on vinyl or cloth, dilute it maybe 7::1 and see how it performs. Also, don't leave the solution on the vinyl or cloth for too long. There are other mold killing marine products...

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

Gee, I would think almost any good 12VDC marine battery would crank a 50HP motor. If you put the voltmeter on the battery binding posts, crank the motor and while cranking the battery (at the battery posts) reads 6 or 7 VDC, you either have a really bad battery or the starter is partially...

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

I have used carboard and masking tape to install the brushes on a 4 brush Mercury starter. I also bent and trimmed some flashing into a U shape, for the same purpose.

    Check/Fix/Replace Starter Motor 1996 50hp

First source a new starter and some brushes, then try to repair it. ARCO, Sierra and others make replacement starters. Try ebasicpower, crowleymarine, iBoats and Marineengine.com and see what they have. You will need an ohmmeter to check the starter. There can be no continuity between the...

Mercury Tempest, Turning Point Mach 3 or Michigan Wheel Apollo?

Gee, I found a place on the net that said Michigan Wheel no longer makes OB and sterndrive props. Yikes - is that true?
