Questions about redoing floor on '76 'Twain 162

The boat in my signature is my project. I crawled around trying to figure out how to replace the floor, stringers and foam. I too didn't really want to split the hull. My life would have been hell trying to sneak everything under what was there. A little piece, a little piece there, all kinds...

    Minimum MPH Boat/Motor?

Well I lost out on the $50 motor by 10 minutes. His neighbor stopped by, seen it and offered him $75. In reply to the last couple of post... For $50 + any need parts would have been a lot cheaper than a nice bow mount trolling motor. Plus if my main motor sh_ts the bed while out on a big...

    Minimum MPH Boat/Motor?

Thank you all for chiming in with your advice. I might just get it and fix it up so it will be at least dependable. If it smokes too much for my occasional lake trout/salmon trolling at least it could get me back to shore if my main motor quits. I'll still plan on an electric trolling motor...

    Minimum MPH Boat/Motor?

I have to revisit this topic... Lot's of good advice was previously given. So far I have not been able to afford either a kicker or electric trolling motor. I could save all winter for let's say a real good electric as new and used 4 strokes are way out of my price range (probably would...

Was wondering if this is any good "Seachoice 15 foot outriggers"

Thank you! I don't foresee me doing much lake trout or salmon fishing so wasn't sure if for $30 it would be a good way of getting my feet wet so to speak. My local sporting shop said I should just try using a Dipsy Diver(?) with rod & reel.

Was wondering if this is any good "Seachoice 15 foot outriggers"

Sorry, I should have included my use. I only do freshwater lakes and ponds. Usually bass fishing but would like to try my hand at lake trout and landlocked salmon.

Was wondering if this is any good "Seachoice 15 foot outriggers"

I spotted a brand new "Seachoice 15' Outrigger Kit, Black & Gold" on FB Market Place close to me. It is a complete kit/setup and only $30.00. Is it even worth it and installing?

Thank you Sea Rider for replying. The boat in question is in my signature.

    Kicker motor questions???

Just curious in case I someday I want to add a kicker motor. Would be used for trolling and emergency return to dock if main engine fails. I was told here to get a 9.9hp 4 stroke. What I am wondering though instead of sitting in the back of the boat, is it possible to rig it up to control from...

    Tuning Holley 80551 (4160)

I cheated a bit, my cam profile recommended 1,200 RPM for idle. I felt that was to high so I set it to 800 RPM. Once my timing was properly set I also fine tuned it watching the vacuum gauge. Just a slight adjustment helped raise the vacuum. Well the standard size calculator produced multiple...

    Tuning Holley 80551 (4160)

I was able to get my idle vacuum up to 22 after adjusting the timing and dialing in the carb. Here's a bit of reading that might help. https://www.holley.com/blog/post/carb_class_5_basic_carb_tuning_tips/ https://www.motortrend.com/how-to/tuning-holley-carb-made-easy/

    Tuning Holley 80551 (4160)

Years ago I ran a Holley 650 CFM single feed vacuum secondaries on a power built street/strip 350 cu.in.. I only had to fine tune it a little out of the box. Before we go any further I'm curious what your idle vacuum is?

Dry carbon fouled plugs 120 hp mercruiser

Very true that you can adjust by ear. But when you use a vacuum gauge you can fine tune it as close to 20-22. Getting the highest reading of vacuum will be the sweet spot. I've worked at car dealers and a shop building and tuning old school muscle cars & motors and that's how we always finished...

    Transom saver

I'm by no means and expert or even well versed in transom savers other than looking for one myself. Looking at your pics all I can think of is 2 options. Add a metal support to the trailer frame of possibly mount a bracket to the bottom of the transom which really defeats the purpose...

Dry carbon fouled plugs 120 hp mercruiser

Black smoke, black soot, dry black fouled plugs are definitely a sign of running rich. What would cause running rich: Carburetor issues - float/needle/seat, jetting issues, choke to name the most common. If the ignition was to be the cause it would be cylinder specific not all the cylinders...

    Backfiring

Okay, compression reading aren't the best but before rebuilding the motor I would do as tank1949 suggest. Okay, oil on spark plugs means oil is getting into the cylinders, we just don't know how much or from where yet. Could be sucked in through the PCV valve or cylinder heads (valves, valve...
