    Help understanding fiberglass boat construction

If that's the actual floor of the boat and not the hull, I would definitely start peeling back the top layer of fiberglass. I can see cracks and what looks like a patch job. You're going to want to check the stringers and transom, a good possibility they are rotted.

    Help understanding fiberglass boat construction

I think you answered your own question. I would cut the top layer of fiberglass out a little at a time. I'd be pretty sure there's only a chuck of wood under the bilge area for attaching the pump. Then you can remove the wood as it's probably shot.

Who has starting doing all their own maintenance?

I'm 62 and have been doing automotive mechanic work since I was a kid helping my dad. I've progressed over the years working at garages and dealerships. I can diagnose problems and fix anything now that can go wrong, from oil changes, building race engines, electronics, etc... I can't really...

Are you sure the fiberglass wasn't compromised? Looks like a bunch of holes, kind of like a sponge.

    Rebuilding pontoon into a tri-toon

I'm certainly no expert but I would think that total weight would need to be part of the equation not just length alone.

    Painting tube trailer frame

Let's take a look at how rust forms; basically metal needs both water/moisture and air/oxygen to form rust. If the tubes are totally sealed the insides shouldn't rust in theory. Adding drain holes would allow both water and air to come in contact with the insides of the tubes. Just what metal...

    Connect boat to house line

No need for multiple replies with the same info. As mentioned above, test the outlet and extension cord. For most household items you wouldn't notice a reverse polarity. Or try another outlet.

Need help!!!! 4.3 mercruiser just clicking

Did you happen to buy a rebuilt starter? Was the solenoid made in China? Since you have been checking all connections and not finding a problem I would check the starter. Uninstall and jump it from a battery. You can also check the solenoid with either a test light or voltage meter. If they...

    Nobody fishing?

Went Saturday with my son to a hot spot in a local river. Usually one catches huge pickerel, walleye, large mouth bass and sometimes trout. We spent about 2 hours there and it was terrible. My son caught a 12" perch, big for around here. He took it home since he never ate perch before. But the...

    Simplest 2 Battery Setup?

Sounds like you are only interested in a 2nd starting battery. So without all kinds of electronics in the picture I vote for the battery switch and another starting battery. That way while the motor is running you can charge either the starting battery you are using and/or the backup so both...

    Glassing Stringers - First Time

I've done some glass work in my automotive career. What worked for me was to lay a somewhat think coat of resin down. Then set the fiberglass cloth down. Top with another coat of resin and work it all into the cloth with a stiff brush. Then roll over it with a small metal J roller. Possibly the...

    Gauges Not Working

If the harness from the switch goes back to the motor, there must be a harness that goes from the motor to the gauges. I would try to find that harness and start from there.

    Glassing Stringers - First Time

Non-wax poly resin stays tacky for a long time. If it's still tacky to the touch DON'T try to sand it, the sandpaper will clog up within a second or two. If it's still tacky apply for waxed poly over it. Of course if it's dry and hard sand it.
