Volvo Penta 5.0 GL exhaust manifold gasket orientation

All, I'm in the process of replacing manifolds and risers. I want to be sure that I have the orientation of the engine to manifold gasket correct. I read that the metal side should face the exhaust manifold but I'm having a hard time identifying the metal side. One side has the manufacturing...

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

Thanks I missed that when uploading from my phone. MODS- I dont have an edit button for post #61, can you please remove the photo of the box? Thanks

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

I believe it was the way that they were packed. There was no padding in between the machined surfaces and they were banging together inside the Box. I'm really surprised Volvo penta would package them this way

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

My OEM parts are coming in. Here's one of the mating surfaces on one of the risers. There is a gouge on one inner surface which is significant enough to catch a fingernail. Will this be an issue?

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

Thanks Bondo. I have found 3.5" ID wet exhaust softwall hose. Hopefully that is correct for this type of application.

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

Thanks guys for all the help and advice. Since trimming a bit of fiberglass is the only downside to installing taller risers, that's what I'm going to do. Cheap insurance since they need to be replaced anyway.

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

All, I'm about to order new risers and I'm trying to decide between taller risers (where I will need to cut fiberglass to make them fit) or go with the same height I currently have. Scott Danforth indicated that I should measure from the bottom of the elbow bend. However, this illustration...

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

Thanks Bruce. I've been around here long enough to remember Don S and he was an amazing resource.

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

Thanks Lou - just to confirm so I don't mislead anyone, I've never had water come in through the exhaust while the engine was running. With the surge incident coming back from the beach, the engine stopped suddenly and then the wave of water hit and came up and through the exhaust. I believe the...

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

Thanks Bruce, the boat spent its first 120 hours in brackish water in Florida prior to my ownership. Since then, I've had it in freshwater with over 300 hours now. In examining the passageways of the manifolds, they look pretty obstructed from what I could tell with chunks of flaking rust...

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

Scott, just to clarify, since this issue first occurred and for the entirety of last summer, we've stopped sitting on the back of the boat completely when anchored because of this issue. With that said, there was one day last summer when we were anchored in chop (no one on the platform beyond...

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

Hold it. Seems I measured incorrectly. I had followed this illustration. A minus b for me is 15". What you wrote makes sense, as the bottom of the elbow is the highest point water would need to overcome to flow into the engine? If that's the case, the bottom of the elbow bend is 3 3/4" below...

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

So I found the bulletin. Hard to follow, seems its for 2007 and newer risers? In looking at the parts schematic (above) for my engine I've got two height options from VP - the standard riser (#1) and the 3" riser (#23). Only a single Y pipe (#20) is listed. I understand what you are saying...

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

Thanks Scott. My SWL to riser height was measured and its a solid 15". Hydrolocked might be the wrong term as the engine stopped while on plane and I took a surge of water to the back of the boat. Not suspecting anything was wrong at the time, I attempted to start the boat. It sounded awful...

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

If I go with taller elbows, how do I compensate for the increase in height so I can still connect to the old section of exhaust pipe? Do they make taller rubber couplers? I did a bit of googling but didn't come up with anything.

Thanks Lou. Sounds like an easy way to test for a failed gasket or crack.

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

Thanks tpenfield. I certainly could be wrong, but I feel strongly that the water is coming through the exhaust vs the head gasket or intake manifold. The main reason I feel that way is because we'll go out for several weekends at a time for hours, pulling skiers, etc and the boat runs very well...
