Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

I believe it was the way that they were packed. There was no padding in between the machined surfaces and they were banging together inside the Box. I'm really surprised Volvo penta would package them this way

Suggest removing the pic of the box in post 61 because it has your address on it. It also show the address of the seller and if you look it up, its just a house in a residential area. Guess he might buy out parts and sell later or something like that

My guess is the elbows where never packaged in the box originally

This is where I'd say that OE is not always better than aftermarket. The Barr exhaust I bought was packed with styrofoam and bubble wrap and showed up in perfect condition. Also, I bought through a dealer local to me and he would inspect parts before you take them to make sure they were good, no problem with shipping then because he took care of that with the vendor. Anything that's heavy like this I try to buy from him for that reason.

Easiest way to get a Mod's attention is select the report function and tell them, they all get it. I did do that for you, it should be gone shortly

Try to find a local VP dealer who will order parts for you. Might cost a bit more but worth it. My shop can order V/P, BRP, Merc, Sierra, Barr etc and get them in a day or 2 and I never pay shipping. He also gives me a discount. I just hope he stays in business! Luckily he's right next to a big marina so he does well. I get everything from him, only oddball NLA or NOS OMC stuff from Ebay.

I could be wrong here but I seem to remember a service bulletin about switching to the taller elbows. My Larson is a 2000 and it uses the the 11 inch high risers, and I always use the after market gaskets (manifold to riser) because the metal ones that are OE from VP have rusted out on me before inside

I took my risers to a machine shop 6 weeks ago and just got them back today. I installed them using the newer thin metal gaskets (part number 3863191) and coated each side of the gasket with the copper-spray-a-gasket. I torqued each bolt in a crisscross pattern to 30 ft-lbs. One riser is fine, the other is leaking water externally.
I pulled the leaking riser and examined the mating surface. The machine shop apparently didn't re-surface the mating surfaces correctly as I took a straight edge and moved it across the surface- the outside mating surface at the corner where the leak was is at least .5mm lower than the rest of the surface. This was quiet frustrating as I took the risers to the "professionals" and waited 6 weeks because I doubted my own abilities. The interior mating surface where the exhaust gases pass through is much higher than the exterior mating surface where the water passes.
As the machine shop was closed today, I put the riser in a bench vise and began flat filing the surface. Made some good headway and now it appears to be flat again.
My OEM riser kit came with the new and thinner metal gaskets instead of the older and thicker gaskets which had the shiny foil surface. On the side with the leak, that gasket has been installed and removed twice now and is looking quite flat. I have a "new" older style foil lined gasket still in the packaging so I'm going to install it. Its quite a bit thicker which I think would benefit me considering I had to re-surface the riser.
What a pain.

I know right?
I filed and filed and got it as close as I could. At least its better than the photo above. I'm also questioning the other side now. I don't want to pull it apart just yet - I think I'll let it sit overnight with water in the riser and pull the spark plugs tomorrow to see if I'm getting any water weeping past the gasket and into the cylinders.

I did not get a chance to read all 4 pages of this thread ... but I can add I have a CC 210 bow rider that I put a 3' swim platform on made by swimplatforms.com. that was the best thing I ever did for that boat. I have had 4 full sized (some oversized) adults sitting standing on the platform and 3 more on the transom couch engine cover for hours at anchor with never a problem. So my thoughts would be maybe a leaking riser somehow. Hope you are all settled and cured by now. Happy Easter Sunday to all.

I assume when you are on shore the trim is all the way up? Just wondering if by raising the trim it raises the water line in the y-pipe as water is shoved into your exhuast openings whether through the prop, lower transom, etc and the platform is helping to slap/trap/direct water into it?

That can't happen since water will just leak out the idle relief ports

Positive update! I filed down the mating surface of the port side riser and used an older but thicker riser to manifold gasket and it appears that there are now no leaks. I'm letting the engine sit overnight with water in the risers and will check for any signs of water intrusion into the cylinders. Hopefully all will be well tomorrow and I'll be ready for summertime on the lake.
