Questions about lubing bellcrank before reassembly.

The book calls for triple guard for the bellcrank and shift cable. I plan on filling the cavity completely with grease. Will regular marine grease do the job? Also when filling this cavity, am I supposed to fill both sides (pivot and upper gear housing) and them just put it back together...

What is the tolerance of the shift rod height?

The magic number is 7 13/64". I switched to mm to measure, and I am .5mm short (0.019685 in). Is there a tolerance for the shift rod, or do I need to brake my lower gear case open to adjust for this .5mm. It seems pretty minimal.

From which surface in the shift cover do I measure the shift rod?

1988 Bayliner Capri. I want to measure my shift rod while I have the outdrive off. I know you measure to the very top of the shift rod head, but at the bottom the shift cover has a raised section right where the rod goes in. Do I measure from the lowest face of the shift plate, or from this...

I bought a Missouri boat and made it a Kansas boat. What do I do with the titles?

I searched the internet but only end up getting tossed through a hundred webpages of rhetoric with no solid answers. I bought my boat in Missouri, where the previous owners had to title both the boat and the trailer. I got both titles with their names on it in the sale. In Kansas trailers...

Should my exhaust blower push out BOTH sides? (88 Bayliner Capri).

The other day I noticed that my blower vent tube on the starboard side is hooked up to the blower motor, and routed towards the bottom of the motor. However on the port side there is a vent cover and a vent hose, but it stops around the trim pump. No blower motor. Is this normal, or am I...

Does anyone else unplug their wiring harness before putting the trailer in the water?

I have always done it, but have never seen anyone else do it. People have even asked what I am doing when I unplug it. I just figure even with a 12V system I don't want a charge on the wires when it goes into the water. Am I alone here?

Can I just eliminate my ESA?

Today I decided to take a closer look at my ESA now they I have a half-@ss knowledge of what I am doing. Manually pushing the lever did nothing, the idle stayed the same. I checked the ground on the ESA to the battery and it was good. I ohm tested the interrupter switch ad though I don't...

A friend is going to lathe one for me, should I be using aluminum, steel or brass? Thanks,

Videos of my ESA not working and then working; what did fixing it change?

I was doing some tinkering last night and discovered this. My ESA arm wasn't moving much at all. http://youtu.be/6-0l9lWKGUo So I took it off the mount and cleaned out the pivoting parts. Previously I had zip-tied this cable and the one going to the selector lever together because the lever...

    Check your tires!

We were heading back from the lake yesterday and I blew a trailer tire. Not a huge deal, but somehow the blown tire actually SUCKED UP the trailer fender and bent it completely down and underneath itself, pushing the top part into the boat. Luckily the part of the fender that hit the boat was...

Adjust shift cable without pulling off my lower unit? UPDATE-part name and method?

1988 Bayliner Capri, 2.3L OMC Ford When I first bought this boat I had to replace the lower shift cable. I did not have the tool that centers the bell crank. All I did was measure the bell crank to 90 degrees from the face of the unit and installed the linkage at the motor with the shift lever...

Well I finally made my first mistake boating!

We're out at Clinton Lake KS this weekend and I anchored the boat just off the beach area, which is normally a pretty calm spot that a lot of people stop to swim at. Yesterday the waves were pretty choppy, but we stopped anyway. I knew my anchor line was frayed in a few spots, but I just haven't...

    Bad vendors and price gouging.

I run an OMC and there is only ONE shop in my area that consistently carries the parts I need. Yes, I could order online, but when you're working on a boat Friday to put it in water Saturday that's not really an option. The first time I went to these guys they charged me $205 for a lower shift...

Found a piece of debris in my distributor, need I be worried?

While removing my points and condenser I found this jammed under the wiring. I looked around the distributor but I didn't see anything that looked like it. The nearest I can describe it is that it looks like a piece of a graphite rod. Is this a part, or just something that dropped in at some...

Found it in a box, is this fuel/water separator complete or do I need more parts?

I was digging through the box of extra parts the previous owners gave me with my 1988 Bayliner Capri I/O 2.3 and found this. I've never actually seen one before, but all the boat has on it now is a small plastic in-line filter which I was going to repalce with one of these anyway when I...

OMC 2.3 Ford, what should my cylinder compression be?

I looked in my shop manual and the owners manual but I'm not seeing it. I think I read here that 120 is ideal, right? I'm waiting on a friend to bring a swivel joint do I can get the plugs out of #3 and #4, but so far #1 and #2 are both pushing 180 psi (cold motor). Thanks!

Need some advise, little frustrated, some idiot stripped my gas tank threads.

Today I pulled my whole fuel system from my tank to the carb. I noticed the aluminum elbow screwed into the tank was fighting me, and when I got it off I discovered this mess! I reprofiled what threads were left in the tube, but the tank threads are shot. I used pipe compound and tried to...

Can I rebuild a marine carburetor with an automotive rebuild kit?

I have an OMC 2.3 Ford motor. I know it is frowned upon using automotive parts for marine applications, but is it safe to do this? Is there a number of parts I can re-use to make this safe? To my understanding the biggest difference is that the overflow on the carb goes back into the tank on...

Will I have to remove my sterndrive again to adjust my lower cable?

I replaced my lower cable this last weekend, but was unclear on the process of adjusting the cables. Therefore I set the bellcrank at 90 degrees to the face of the unit, put my control unit in the neutral position and adjusted the upper half of the lower shift cable accordingly before buttoning...

Help please! Ford 2.3 and OMC Cobra outdrive stalls when shifted into gear.

Hello, to begin with please take it easy on me. This is my first boat and I find myself easily getting lost in the terminology. Earlier this week I bought a 1988 Bayliner Capri with a 2.3 Ford Motor and an OMC Cobra outdrive. The boat would not shift into reverse and I bought it "as is". The...
