    Check spark with an open air tester available at any auto parts store. Spark should jump at least a 1/4" gap. Don't rely on looking at spark at the plugs as that is not an accurate way of testing.

    It may take 6-10 cycles to get the air purged and fluid level topped up. I had to manually bring the motor up for the first few cycles. When it's up, remove the top screw and fill to overflowing. Replace the screw, bring it down, repeat until it's working properly.

    I've had similar problems with new points not opening at all with the eccentric screw. I've given up on the "new" junk they are selling nowadays and have been refubishing old points with good results. They just don't make them like they used to.

    I've been using Vishay .22mf 850 volt capacitors and they work well. I clean out the old case with a series of drills and once empty I drill a small hole in the bottom of the case and fit the new capacitor into the case and fill with epoxy.

    May be running on one cylinder, or one cylinder intermittently cutting out. Try pulling plug wire one at a time. For example, if it dies when you pull the top wire, then the bottom cylinder is cutting out.

    FIRST: check compression, then check spark. Spark should jump a 1/4"+ gap with an open air spark tester. If it doesn't pass the spark test, pull the flywheel and check the coils, points, condensers. Do these tests before pouring any money into it.

    Tighten the pivot pin nut until the motor stays up when tilted. Tilt it high enough to install the transom saver. Then tilt it back down until the motor is secure against the transom saver.

    Compression should be 110psi or greater. Remove exhaust covers and check pistons and rings. Rings should spring in and out when pressed. If all OK, then time to pull the head and replace head gasket.
