    Just looked closely at the pics - Your motor had factory electric start. Solenoid should be in the cowl pan. It would be fairly easy to rewire it to bypass the remote cable hookup if you can't find the cable. Had a key start. Turning off the key would kill the engine. See Crosbyman's diagram.

    If you now have good spark and the motor runs good, I wouldn't replace the points. IMO, clean old points are better than the new points they are selling nowadays. In fact I have "refurbished" a bunch of old points I had on hand and I will use those for future repairs rather than buying new.

    I bought a new seal but since the motor runs great (no exhaust in the motor cover), I think I'll wait to install it until fall when I'll pull the gearcase to get to it.

    Sorry to revive an old thread. Just wondering if a torn exhaust seal could cause excessive unburnt gas/oil residue from leaking out the seam where the gearcase attaches to the leg?

    My 1959 15' Crestliner with a 1959 Evinrude Lark 35hp has the above prop. Works great. Unfortunately the hub spun on me. I'm wondering what the diameter and pitch are so I can get a new one?

    Is it an actual backfire or more of a cough or hiccup? If so, could be just lean sneeze. Open up the slow speed needle a little.
