Try running it Briefly, on a much Oil Rich Mixture. If it Idles Better, I would be looking at the Upper Crankshaft Seal. Also check for any Oil Recirculation Line from the Crankcase up to the Upper Bearing Area.
or Pull the Flywheel and look for Oil at the Seal Area
Are you running the Motor on Muffs, in a Tank, or on the Boat in the water?
If on Muffs, you would be able to see all the Places that water will exit the Motor, not just the Teletale(I really don't put much Faith in them, as they just indicate water makes it to the Powerhead, and little Else)...
Does it die after 3 minutes at all speeds?
Spraying Carb Cleaner into a Carb does Eff all, except clean the Throat and Throttle Valve.
If the Motor can't Idle, it is likely the Idle Circuit is Dirty, and a Teardown and proper Cleaning required
Other Things... Is the Spark strong enough at both...
The System is behaving like you have have engaged the Trailering lock, which is why Salty(no disrespect intended), suggested loosening the Tilt Tube.
Have you tried holding the Switch on, after the Outboard is all the Way Up, and all the way Down? If not, do it a few Times, and then recheck the...
You Prop an Engine so it run at or Near the Top of the WOT Range. If you chose a prop because you like a certain Speed at a certain Rpm, and the Engine isn't getting to the WOT Range, you will be Torturing that Engine. But, hey, it is your Engine to wreck, and your Money to repair/replace it
I too learned to ski behind a 2 Stroke 40hp, even did some deep water starts on a Slalom Ski behind it. I too have also noticed that with the 4 Strokes, 150hp on a 15 ft boat, can barely pull a skier on 2 skis.
A couple of Days ago, it was about 32-33(90-93F) and I put my phone on the Dash, 40 minutes later it was too hot to hold. I, for the first time ever saw the Red Thermometer on the screen. I took it out of the OtterBox, and held it against the AC outlet. Several minutes later It was working...
Don't be so certain that is any different on the water, Morons are Texting while Steering the Boat, and often have NO Clue regarding Right of Way
I think you will agree that Weekends have better Entertainment at the Launch though
Back in 2013, I made a Ring Tone from a Song on Family Guy "Bag of Weed" Weed wasn't Legal yet, and it did turn Heads. Since 2017, weed is Legal, and everywhere, so the Shock Value is gone, but the Tune is Catchy so I still have it as the Ring Tone
Out of the Water, one or two dead Cylinders and the Engine will appear to run okay, but once there is Back Pressure, from the Water blocking the Exhaust, that will change.
All the Cylinders are fed from a common Carb, so unless there is a Leak where the Manifold meets the Head, I would focus on...
I used to use Lacquer Thinner for Cleaning Carbs, it removed Dirt/Gum/Varnish and if they were left on the Carb, Plastic Parts. SeaFoam is mostly Oil and Naphtha. I have found just about anything, including Pine-Sol to be a better Cleaner. Oil in a Carb, well the Carb gets lots of Oil, as it in...
Even though it doesn't get as Hot under the Cowl as it does under a Car Hood, those hoses can and do get brittle. I doubt the use of the Zip Tie was an Issue
Could be a lot of things. That last 15% of the Throttle Movement, can more than double the Fuel consumption rate. Too bad you didn't do some Troubleshooting while on the Water, as you could see if anything made a Difference. Now you can only Idle the Motor, not putting it under load.
It does...
A GXI is a Fuel Injection Motor, correct? If so, it would have a Higher RPM range to to get 270hp out of 5 liter. The 260hp version of that motor was 4800-5200 Rpm(and it was way slower out of the hole, than my 260hp carbed 5.7 VP). Find out what it is, "I believe..." is not the correct Answer...
A 22 footer is asking a lot of a 5 liter. Even propped for the top of the WOT Range, is not gonna be a Ball of Fire out of the Hole
What WOT Rpm are you currently getting? I suspect the WOT Rpm Range for that Engine is 4600 to 5000
I would guess than with a 1.66:1 Final Drive Ratio, that a 21"...
