15hp Tohatsu - issues to look for

They're asking $700 for the boat and motor (no trailer). It looks like it has been sitting unused, but if it can be cleaned up and run OK then that might be cheap enough to take a chance on. I don't know what a used package like this would typically go for (10 foot Avon hard bottom inflatable).

    2020 25hp Tohatsu dealer says....not!

Great point on the warranty, though if the problem is junk from the gas I suspect it wouldn't be covered anyway. If you decide to get adventurous, maybe a tool like this would help: https://www.motionpro.com/c/fuel-injector-cleaner-kits

15hp Tohatsu - issues to look for

Does anyone recognize this vintage Tohatsu 15HP, and is there anything specific on these models that I should look for when evaluating a used motor with unknown history? Specific areas that corrode, or common failures, etc.. I stumbled upon a boat + motor combo for sale locally with a 15HP...

    2020 25hp Tohatsu dealer says....not!

If you are positive that running out of gas and switching tanks was the only significant event, and especially if the problem happened right away, then you know 99.9% for sure it's a fuel system related problem. If that motor has carburetor(s) then take them apart and make sure everything is...

05' Tohatsu 15 4 stroke. Starts and dies within seconds.

This is the first I've ever heard an engine turn off from oil too full, I've only seen oil pressure switches that kill the motor when the pressure drops too low (indicating low oil level). Is there actually a too-full sensor, or was the high level just allowing the oil to get whipped up into a...

    Won’t pee

It certainly sounds like that impeller wasn't getting water. I would get a new water pump (impeller, cup, wear plate if it's marked up), don't forget to grease the cup and wear plate before you put it back together. The blades on the impeller won't always correct themselves if they're pointed...

    Auto by start resistance

I don't have that motor to compare, but with low ohm readings it's important to double check your probes to make sure they have a low impedance. Touch both probes together and make sure you're getting something very close to zero ohms. If you're not then solve that problem before reading the...

Have you verified that the choke is actually closing off the carburetor when you turn it on? Look into the carburetor and make sure the choke plate is working properly.

    2003 BF40A Honda 40hp tilt/trim issue

You could also leave the motor in neutral, give it some revvs and see if the trim works better. If yes, then that implies that the alternator/generator on the motor is powering the trim and for whatever reason the battery isn't supplying enough power; as mentioned above, maybe a bad connection...

Camshaft pulley 8 hp Honda not spinning camshaft

Without knowing why or how it failed there's no way to say, but a new sprocket is the safest way to go. But as mentioned above find out if that's an interference engine (can the valves hit the pistons if the timing gets off), and if it is then verify that no valves are bent before spending a...

Camshaft pulley 8 hp Honda not spinning camshaft

I don't know, I'm not familiar with that sprocket, but I suspect it could be more than that. Look close to see if you can figure out what's going on. Is it possible the hub was pressed in and just came out?

Camshaft pulley 8 hp Honda not spinning camshaft

The key is good, so if the pulley (belt sprocket) is spinning the cam should be too. However the hub of the sprocket looks like it could be disconnected from the rest of the sprocket. If you put the sprocket back on the cam, be sure the key is engaged, make the timing right (so you don't smack...

BF50 Oil leak before and after valve cover gasket change

Just for a reference point, on my 99' 50 what has worked is making sure the surfaces are sterile clean, new gasket, then put a tiny dab of sealer in the sharp corners. Don't over torque. If you do this and still have a leak, then follow @ahicks advice and look for something physically damaged.

Camshaft pulley 8 hp Honda not spinning camshaft

Can you post pictures? Can you tell why the pulley isn't spinning the cam? Remove the pulley and see if there is a key that has sheared.

    2003 Honda 8 hp won’t start

That is very odd.. How did the camshaft pulley become disconnected from the cam? Did you remove it, or is it possible that someone partially disassembled the motor before you acquired it? Are you sure it was running when it was put away? Regarding your question about the bolt that won't...

    2003 Honda 8 hp won’t start

If it was run a lot after it was recovered then that most likely dried it out. Was it submerged in salt or fresh? Check Amazon and eBay, you can probably get a compression tester a lot less expensive than you think. Also check your local auto stores, some loan tools cheap or at no cost.

    2003 Honda 8 hp won’t start

Also just adding gas to the cylinder isn't necessarily a way to get fire. Spraying starting fluid in the carburetor (open full throttle when you spray) is much more likely to get a result.

    08' Honda 150hp 4-stroke Heat Alarm

Do some real homework on the chemicals. From my reading, Rydlyme seemed to me to be the safest to use that was also strong enough to actually work. I did look at the West Marine one above but I believe it had warnings about aluminum. Double check me. Acids will eat the scale, that's the easy...
