1976 Mercury 1150 Lower Unit Compatibility

Do you know if a late 70's 1400 will fit? Any idea about 80's motors? I have a couple of those nearby.

Interesting. I live at 7000' feet. Good to know.

1976 Mercury 1150 Lower Unit Compatibility

I have a 1976 Tower of Power. I'd like to pick up another motor for parts and a lower unit in particular. What years and HP are compatible? This is info I have searched for but I can only find newer motors on interchanges. In particular I am wondering if some of the larger motors like 125 and...

1976 Mercury 1150 - Water Problems, Several of Them

My thinking: many of the bolts are hard to access. I could get a wrench in there but I couldn't get an impact driver/gun. I'd rather do impact so that I am less likely to break the bolts.

1976 Mercury 1150 - Water Problems, Several of Them

At least in the case of the water jacket cover around the spark plugs, I read that the reason these leaks develop is that there are no bolts near the spark plugs. Only on the outer part of the cover. So tightening those wouldn't apply any appreciable pressure around the spark plugs, I think...

The risk/rewards seems in favor of silicone patches if possible. Then replacing all gaskets at a later date.

I haven't. My concern is that the same thing would happen as if I tried to remove them and replace the gasket, which is breaking.

1976 Mercury 1150 - Water Problems, Several of Them

Lots of great advice. Thanks for writing all this. The first thing I did on the motor was heat shrink all the wires with crumbling insulation. There were a lot of them.

1976 Mercury 1150 - Water Problems, Several of Them

Chris, that sounds like a big undertaking. Certainly intimidating. That's what I needed to know. When you said I should source the baffle and water jacket cover, would you expect those to break? Sorry if I don't understand. I'm not getting water in the cylinders, fortunately. Does this mean...

1976 Mercury 1150 - Water Problems, Several of Them

A related question: when I do pull the exhaust cover off, should I also replace the inner gasket?

Ahh. I wonder if some JB Weld over the torn gasket would hold it until I want to lift the powerplant (several things I'd like to do and use it this year, hoping to avoid adding another if possible). I have a list of next year stuff. I'd like to add this to that if possible. :-)

It looks like it's coming out from that cover near the rightmost bolt marked 6. I'm guessing this is the kind of thing that I should fix but isn't critically urgent.

1976 Mercury 1150 - Water Problems, Several of Them

Is there more than one water jacket cover? I'm asking since I believed the cover around the spark plugs was it.

1976 Mercury 1150 - Water Problems, Several of Them

Anyone recognize the thing that's squirting water? It's at the bottom of the powerplant, to port. Looks like a cover w/ gasket. It's spitting water consistently. Bottom of this. Video

I didn't know that about the RPMs.

Thanks Chris. That's reassuring about the exhaust. For the gasket, I guess I'm gonna caulk it. Tapping the holes and lifting the powerplant sounds like too much work for a small issue. I was thinking the water was coming out of the threads! What a relief.

I guess when I fast idle, there's more pressure in the exhaust and it has to blow more water out the relief port. Good perspective.
