1976 Mercury 1150 - Water Problems, Several of Them

I've picked up a few things. 2. This is the exhaust relief port. I'm still trying to figure out if a huge spray when fast idling is normal. 3. Dog clutch? 4. This is a water outlet above the anticavitation plate. It's normal. So #4 is solved.

1976 Mercury 1150 - Water Problems, Several of Them

That's what I was hoping. I've got 1 manual (offial Mercury from 70's) but it has some gaps. And I've got 3 other manuals en route (I bought all of them). Would you say it's normal for the exhaust to spit out A LOT of water when the throttle is up? Like a hose? The motor didn't sound as good as...

1976 Mercury 1150 - Water Problems, Several of Them

Financially that's not a good option. I'm working on this motor.

1976 Mercury 1150 - Water Problems, Several of Them

Thanks for the advice. Do you know what that gasket is called? I did shift quickly. This is the first boat I've worked on but I've owned a few before. There's resistance when it grinds that slows the shift.

1976 Mercury 1150 - Water Problems, Several of Them

After to rebuilding the fuel pump today, I was excited to finally let my 1150 run for more than a moment. It started right up and I got the pee hole working. But then I noticed water in places I don't want it and another issue. I'm not knowledge so I don't know the parts. I noticed 4 issues or...

    1976 Mercury Tilt/Trim Controls

That's what I need to know! You and Chris are super helpful. My pin is already set in the first hole. And the trim stop works. Well today I learned something. Thanks you guys.

    1976 Mercury Tilt/Trim Controls

My 1976 Mercury 1150 has power tilt and trim with an external pump. On the dash, the controls have 3 buttons. The bottom button goes down. Middle button seems to move it outward with a limited range of motion. Top button only does anything if it's pressed at the same time as the middle button...

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

Ohhh. I was thinking it replaced the cap on the other end. That seems great. Mine gets in next week. I guess you would take the Marine grease off and apply some yamalube if you were me?

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

I'm assuming the upgrade is to be able to grease the steering rod inside the tube better? I think that would push crud out if any got in so I'm sold.

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

I don't know enough and haven't gotten into it yet. At this point I'm not even sure what all the wires go to beside the trim controls and the horn and that there are plenty of things disconnected. When I do I will revisit your comment. I like the idea of cleaning it up. Actually I have OCD so I...

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

I got it done. Steering works 100%. The steel wool wasn't doing much. So I figured out that I can put dremel grinding wheels over the steel wool and I did that. That fixed up the tube really well. Then I hit it with steel wool and then I wrapped more shop towels around the steel wool which put...

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

Ran into an issue. Turns out, there's a section of the tube with some rust and probably pitting. It's a little hard to tell. I plan to put some very coarse steel wool on the drill bit and see if that cleans it up. That rust won't let the steering cable pass.

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

It does. That's something that I made sure worked before I messed with this. I'm on my fifth pass with a wypall on the hammer bit set to drill only cleaning out the tube.

And you are right of course about the knicks. You were right about all of it. Thanks for all the help!

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

I just got it out with the rotary hammer set only to hammer and a very long thin SDS bit. Thanks!

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

I totally misunderstood. The video's very helpful. I was only trying to get it the other way.
