1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

Vice grip marks are mine and they aren't a concern because they are at the end where it doesn't slide in or contact anything. But thanks for the concern. I don't have an air hammer but I do have a hammer drill I just figured I would get more force on it with a car. But maybe the hammering...

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

So replace the entire steering cable? I guess I can't see any other way since it's attached to all the sliding tubes. The steering cable is the inner part. There's a tube in between that and the threaded pipe that serves as the guide for everything. It's that middle tube that is stuck. What I...

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

I put a tow strap on the front of the trailer hook to a tree to keep the trailer from spinning and I snapped the mobile home anchors I used to attach the winch to the steering piece. That tube still hasn't budged at all.

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

I've been working on taking the steering apart. It looks like the steering has three tubes. 1. Outer and threaded on both ends, which is stationary. This one moves in and out fine. 2. Middle tube is seized so badly. I was eventually able to get it to move in a bit but now I can't move it out...

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

Thanks at this point based on the fact that it's coming from inside the cowl, I'm fairly confident it's old gas.

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

The stuff on the side of the lower unit is kind of thick and doesn't have a smell. The gas is yellow. It's also thin and smells like gas though. Can gas thicken and lose its scent?

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

I'm guessing... mechanical? And yes there's a mess of disconnected wires. Looks like 45 years of bare-minimum work.

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

I got a cold so I haven't been outside to check yet but I will mention that the fluid seemed much more oily than gasoline. But I am unfamiliar with pre-mixed two cycle.

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

I'll get some better photos tomorrow. Now I'm not confident that it has hydraulic steering or not. I've yet to look if there are hydraulic lines or just cables, or if there is a place to add fluid at the helm. Been out of town for the holiday. Thanks for all the advice, y'all.

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

Do you know where the gear loop would exit in such a scenario? And thanks for the diagram. It does seem helpful.

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

I plan to, thanks for the confirmation. I saw YouTube video where a guy does that on a smaller motor and it seemed doable. I also learned from that video that it seems like my motor has hydraulic power steering.

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

Good tip on the cleaning. I just got the boat, motor included, last week. So far I tested the compression, which was good, changed the spark plugs, figured out that the fuel pump is bad (will rebuild it), and deal with crumbling starter wires. I ran some fuel into it with gravity and it started...

1976 Mercury 1150 Yellow Fluid Leak (Steering?)

I picked up a 1976 Starcraft Super Sport 22 with a Mercury 1150 outboard and have been working on getting it ready for spring. I've had a boat before but I'm new to working on my own boat and a 1976 presents opportunity for practice! Anyhow I need help. I can't find this in the official manual...
