Upper shift shaft seal in bell housing...

Is this a common area to cause a leak into the u-joint bellows? I'm guessing I should probably change the seals and bushing here while I've got things apart. What's required to change these parts? I couldn't find an exact reference in the OEM service manual. Thanks

Gimbal bearing replacement - Alpha 1 Gen II

I pulled my stern drive today and found water in the u-joint bellows. Not a good sign. After removing the bellows and cleaning things up a bit I tried to move the inner race of the bearing by hand and it would barely budge. It should turn smoothly right? So it looks like the bearing will...

    What size safety wire?

I'm having trouble tracking down stainless safety wire locally so I'm probably just going to order some from McMaster Carr. I only need it to safety wire the set screw on the shift slide in my outdrive. What size is most commonly used, .032 / 20 gauge? Thanks

Shift shaft bushing and oil seal...

Can just the seal be replaced without removing the bushing assembly from the gear housing? The manual says the bushing and seal are only availabe as an assembly, but looking at parts diagram the oil seal is listed separately as part# 8164641. It looks like it would be an easy seal to replace...

Bellows replacement - special tools required?

I'm gearing up to change the bellows on my Alpha 1. I see the manual shows several special tools. Will I need these to complete the job? Thanks

    Shift bellows leak

I just noticed today my shift bellows is split in two. I imagine this will let water into the boat. How severe of a leak will this cause? Just wondering if it's a "must fix now" item or you can live with it for a while. Thanks

Exhaust bellows - is glue necessary?

I only removed the end that connects to the drive. Is it necessary I use glue when I reassemble? Is it to seal out water or just to help hold it on? Thanks

Water pump face seal - Alpha 1

This is the seal that slides down over the drive shaft on top of the pump housing. I pulled my lower unit today to find the seal missing. Would operating the boat without this seal have caused any cooling issues? Looking at it it looks like it still would have pumped water ok. I can't...

Strange part in gear housing - Alpha 1

I dropped the lower unit today to check/change the impeller. As soon as I started to pull the unit down a metal pin fell on the ground. I've checked the service manual and the exploded parts diagrams for both the gear housing and drive housing and do not see any reference to it. It's roughly...

    Question on refilling drive oil...

The manual says to lower the drive unit so that the anti-ventilation plate is level before refilling. How critical is this? My driveway where I park the boat is on a grade and I can't put the trim all the way down without the skeg hitting the concrete. It's maybe at a 10 - 20 degree angle...

Quicksilver 2-4-C Marine Lubricant with Teflon

The service manual mentions using this lubricant in several areas. Is it an absolute must to use the Quicksilver branded lube? What else can be substituted? For example the manual mentions using it on the splines of the drive shaft and the water tube in the drive shaft housing. Thanks

Question on water pump assembly - Alpha 1

The service manual states: "Apply Quicksilver Perfect Seal to the small hole gasket. Place the small hole gasket, the face plate and the large hole gasket onto the gear case. NOTE: Add Quicksilver Perfect Seal to the gasket to seal it and prevent water from seeping into the gear housing." Do...

    Wiring a stereo amplifier

So I bought this boat and it came with a decent head unit, 2 amplifiers, and 6 speakers. I'm not into big booming music out on the water, but I do appreciate a good sounding system. I'm redoing all the wiring and removing the 2 subs and the amp that ran the subs and leaving a pair of 6x9's and...

    Need help selecting boat cover

I have a 1994 Bayliner 1850 Capri that I am converting to a fish and ski. I noticed they sell covers that are designated for fish and ski boats. Does anyone have any experience with these covers? Do they fit good? My biggest concern is making sure it fits right with a bow mount trolling...

    Perfect seal substitutes...

It sounds like there are substitutes out there. How about Permatex #2? I ask because I have some of that and it would save me time and money. I will be using it for an impeller replacement soon. If I must have Perfect Seal or something different please advise. Thanks

Trim tab - is it needed?

I just noticed the trim tab is completely missing from my outdrive. I know it acts as a sacrificial anode. Was this something that maybe was not installed from the factory or do all outdrives have trim tabs? I only plan on using this boat in freshwater, do I need to replace the trim tab? Thanks

    Thermostat replacement - 4.3LX

1994 4.3LX that I just purchased. I was considering replacing the thermostat just to be safe since it's probably the original. Can I use a thermostat from the auto parts store or does it need to be a marine part? Do I just need the thermostat and a new gasket? Thanks

Won't start - fuel pump question? (trouble found)

'94 4.3LX won't start. I can't see or smell any gas at the carburetor. I pulled the connector at the fuel pump and checked for voltage with the key on and I don't get anything. Should I get 12v here with the key on? If so, where could I lose it? I trace the wires back a short ways to the...
