    1970 181 to a 1978 181 different engine harness?

Gonna guess the 1970 model was equipped with an ammeter, hence the difference in harness plug. Best bet for success is to use the entire 1978 package from pulley to prop including the power trim system. Would mean r and r of the entire transom assy but at least you know it'll work. Plus at this...

    Bah. Water in bellows.

Quad ring looks bulged in first pic, around the 5, 6, and 7 o clock positions. Doesn't appear to be much water in the bellows. Perhaps condensation? Shaft o rings aren't for sealing water or oil, they are to dampen vibration between the splined shaft and gimbal bearing. Light oil/grease at...

Engine alignment ,just got the tool. Pics posted

Once the tool end enters the coupler snout it may require a hammer to fully seat the tool end in the coupler. Once seated fully you hammer the tool end up, down and side to side to align the gimbal bearing Then remove the alignment bar and inspect the grease witness marks to determine which way...

Like scott says, you need to provide more info. Engine make/model specifically helps. Serial numbers are best

    Hole in Mercruiser gimbel housing

It's your boat and you can do what you like but my recommendation is to NOT drill a hole in the gimbal housing to complete this job. Yeah it's not the easiest job to do correctly but it's worth it to do it right. If you feel the absolute need for proper working trim senders then it's best to...

MerCruiser 5.0 MPI pinging/detonation at higher RPMs

I don't know. I was suggesting items to inspect thinking pragmatically. Sounds like OP is sure the clamp bolt is secure therefore further troubleshooting is required. I've removed and installed this type of distributor many times. Can't recall any time I've worked on one that wobbles like OPs...

    Hole in Mercruiser gimbel housing

Of couse I understand the terminal block portion but engine vent exit has me vexed. Appreciate work around fixes however considering trim sender replacement if absolutely necessary one should understand the importance of necessary instruments

    Hole in Mercruiser gimbel housing

It's easier to replace the trim sender kit without pulling the drive. Nonetheless, if you're considering drilling through either the gimbal housing or the transom to complete the job I guarantee you it won't turn out well

MerCruiser 5.0 MPI pinging/detonation at higher RPMs

Video posted by OP clearly shows the hei/flat cap style distributor commonly found on merc mpi engines Based on the decent amount of corrosion on external areas of the engine seen in the video one would guess the distributor cap itself is suspect. As far as the movment seen on the distributor...

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

That's not good Not even close to properly adjusting valve lash. This project may be outside your scope. Unless you have at least an oem manual with no prior experience setting lash, pictures won't help you

    Ford 302 timing

22-26 degrees of advance, not including base timing which is most likely 10 degrees BTDC. This indicates 32-36 degrees of total advance including the base of 10 degrees

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

Again, is the firing order correct? Have you verified TDC #1? Have you checked that timing is at least close to correct while cranking? You say you don't have the talent to adjust valve lash but you had the heads off and re installed. How did you adjust lash at that time?

    Can I replace a Mercruiser 5.0L with a 4.5L engine?

In your case it'd be easier and cheaper to get a 5.7 long block

Can someone tell me what these wires are for?

No. The timing shunt wires come from the ignition module on the distributor The wires in question are for the trim sender that the guage (which OP does not have) reads

    1993 7.4L Gen V Fuel Pump Issue?

Yeah, was referring to the metal shaft housing not the plastic impeller kit Looking on merc epc the metal shaft housing is still available, is expensive tho

    Impeller service & gear position

Irrelevant All mc/r/mr/alpha style merc drives must be in FWD gear for removal/install save for the few counter rotated alpha drives still out there

    mercruiser 188 fuel help

You need to determine if you are losing spark or fuel related to the engine shutting down. Based on your findings there are many avenues to consider when troubleshooting the root cause. WAG based on original post is the charging system is failing resulting in dead batteries. This could be only...

Question about installing new clutch/gear set in 1999 Bravo 3

Yes, a shim is required to properly install the updated gear set. The new gear set will come with instructions on how to properly install the updated gear/bearing set in the older style driveshaft housing The shims take the place of the upper and lower thrust bearing races and are required for...

    1993 7.4L Gen V Fuel Pump Issue?

Agreed The fuel pump is operated by a cam lobe on the water pump shaft. In the video the belt that turns the water pump is stationary when the engine is being turned over. Appears the belt isn't tight? In any case, if the water pump isn't turning the fuel pump will not work. Anytime one...
