    How to drain tilt-trim system

With the drive fully down/in remove the hoses from the aft connections on the trim rams. Have a helper run the pump from the remote handle while you collect the oil in a pan from the hose ends. Once the oil is out you can flush the system with new oil until it comes out clean, reattach the...

Mercruiser 4.3…Milky oil coming from timing cover.

Not going to prove you wrong, because you are not. I will share an experiment I performed several years ago. During winterizing I chose four 4.3 engines with intake drain plugs, two Volvo, two mercruisers. The first mercruiser I opened the intake drain first, water gushed out, maybe a pint or...

    Exhaust Manifold bolts

Those exhaust ports look nasty and the valve seats are most likely toast. Water in the combustion chamber causes severe damage in a short time. Based on the photos it appears this is a salt water engine? As Lou stated a valve job is most likely required at a minimum, would think there is...

    Trim ram maxium extension

Volvo SX drives/transom assys do not use a trim limit, they only have a sender for the gauge located on the stbd side of the gimbal ring. The operator is required to monitor the gauge to prevent the drive from going to high. That said if you feel the drive isn't up/out enough to safely trailer...

    1999 7.4 (L29) only hitting 3400RPM at WOT

yeah, op's engine is an efi mefi controlled ignition/fuel system. base timing mode will usually advance throttle automatically, if not 1500 rpm is considered spec for timing on these motors. 1800 may be a little high but won't hurt anything 454 can handle close to 40 degrees advance at higher...

1989 four winns liberator 350 engine no spark!

i would strongly recommend avoiding this one, have had many fail/not operate properly in the past...

    1999 7.4 (L29) only hitting 3400RPM at WOT

no check vacuum between the fuel pump and the tank, this will tell you how much vacuum the fuel pump is creating to draw fuel from the tank. should be no more than 2 in/hg, any more indicates a restriction between the tank supply and the pump

    MerCruiser 3.0 starter question

if the primary on the starter solenoid is having 12 volts applied and the starter turns then the starter and solenoid are fine. if bypassing the starter solenoid without testing it tells you the motor is good, but nothing about the solenoid you can test the slave solenoid by checking for...

High oil pressure smell of gas in oil

no such thing as limp mode for high oil pressure, and a carbureted engine does not have a limp mode. some of the thunderbolt five modules have a knock sensor most likely the engine is flooding out from an improperly tuned carb or carb in need of a rebuild. this would account for fuel...

1989 four winns liberator 350 engine no spark!

you can do as you please but if all you need is an ignition sensor there's no reason to abate the thunderbolt system. it's pretty much the best stock marine electronic ignition system available

1989 four winns liberator 350 engine no spark!

voltmeter red lead to wht/red lead coming from ignition module black meter lead to good ground, key on should see 12 (+) volts with meter still attached hold the wht/grn wire from module to good ground and see if voltage drops momentarily then returns to 12 (+) volts - this will tell you the...

Mercruiser dipstick tube doesn't fit with new pan

merc tube is longer to allow one to exit the oil from the pan using a vacuum pump you could cut the merc tube to fit but the dipstick may not seat all the way due to pan differences, plus you couldn't vacuum all the old oil out

when was the last time you pulled the drive?

Mercruiser 3.0 squeal keeping engine from starting

have you looked under the dist cap? engine turning over smooth like that but hardly running could be a timing issue, like a broken/bent rotor tang?

    1999 7.4 (L29) only hitting 3400RPM at WOT

okay, have you verified timing is advancing? should check fuel pressure at wot under a load and still a good idea to check fuel system vacuum at the same time 454 in a 23 foot sea ray? that boat should do 50 mph easy with more to go

    Kills at midrange throttle settings

the coil is usually the LAST ignition component to fail. that said i have found faulty coils but that is after most other components have been tested/replaced like ad said, check your carb/fuel system first, then you can focus on the ignition system

Mercruiser 3.0 squeal keeping engine from starting

appears you have a definite internal engine issue, first step is to check compression at all cylinders

could be stuck needle/seat have you verified the fuel pump operation?

    1999 7.4 (L29) only hitting 3400RPM at WOT

did you have the ignition system in base timing mode? fuel pressure sounds about right, iirc spec is 40-43 psi throughout the rpm range should also check fuel system vacuum, no more than 2 in/hg

Mercuiser 3.0 Popped rear core plug

yes the cooling system isn't building enough pressure in the block to allow exit out the exhaust once you have the plug installed it's in your best interest to pressure test the cooling system to check for additional leaks
