    never touched a hot 58 myself but with free flowing water (no thermostat) seems you should be able to touch & hold several seconds motor is 66 years old...!! for the price of a head gasket you can always pull the cyl. head check out the cyl walls and water pasage for excessive...

    pulling the head isn't so bad try not to break the base gasket and any carbon seals... if any on the drive shaft see a CD version good time to can clean out the exhaust carbon in the lower unit :)

    pump is ok carb is clean and adjusted .... ignition works.... fuel/oil is fresh... hand pumping does not help BTW HS jet orifice "I checked the bottom jet and it looked pretty good." ....looked and clean are not the same.. did you clean it ?? Cylinders need the fuel to work and...

    see #15's easy access probably ...run a carb cleaning tool in the jet followed with a shot of carb cleaner. a 2lb mono may do the job

    do google or utube searches on bogging outboards . Fuel starvation seems a frequent cause assoc. with air leaks, degrading "grey" fuel lines, dirty filters etc...

    ok you changed the impeller. Was the engine run before the change ? and what is hot and then you went ahead with the change or did it just become hot after your work ? did you do any gasket work ?

    well if not fuel quality, not a plugged up carb, good hose good filters , good fuel pump etc....ignition could be a cause. condensers even new ones can be bad or react to heat build-up. VOM testing of condensers is not conclusive unless truly bad. points being mecanical less...

    glad to help ..sometimes I eat crow . you do not suspect fuel but bad fuel is a known cause of surging. is your's fresh ?? did you check the bottom HS orifice jet ?.

    make certain the bottom fat donut #21 is installed to !! do not use a big wire ... use carb cleaning tools or small mono line in jet orifices. make certain float is not upside down ... it should drop level with the carb bowl.

    have you tried hand pumping fuel when it does start to falter ? Tank vent open ? and working ? hose is good ? needle clip on the float is installed ? cooling OK ???

    agree but... would you buy a 20 year old engine with " harder" to find injectors and unknown history. Don't get me wrong my 2005 has run great for 18 years but 2024 is coming up and as years go by... the future is uncertain. My 2 stroke kickers (small Mercs or OMC) from the 60's...
