    dwell meter will read 0 while cranking if the points are not gaped or the condenser is bad. simple DVM set on capacitor testing will also test the condenser.

    the thermostat is used as a mixing valve. constant flow to exhaust, with cycling flow to the motor make sure the spacer is in there

    I would look for a new motor at this point. If your boat is bigger than 19', I would jump to a V8 like @Scott06 did on his.

    use a dwell meter to set points. if there is an issue, you will see it immediately in the meter.

    most of the time its the carb. 2 wire vs 3 wire you are talking about the ignition sensor or trigger assembly. which is a glorified set of breaker points
