    is this a new problem recently ..sounds like some linkage is not adjusted properly or gears destroyed partially by improper shifting procedure by previous owner any metal chips on the oil plug magnet ??

    tab up and holes lined up top left and right are not symetrical like the middle and bottom bolt holes so you must line up the top bolt holes with the gasket

    well... the 1982 4hp uses good old 0584477 available everywhere including china but.... coils (2) just don't "stop working" tell us more before spending good money . cracked ?? what ohms do you measure from the secondary High voltage pin and primary wires (usually 4-7 Kohms)...

    have you done anything electricaly ( clean plug wire ends , measure coil resistances to compare etc..) what about the carbs..... any work done on the LS circuit jets and drip chambers some don't like it but try simple stuff like a good shot of seafoam it did wonders on my snowblower...

    don't forget to change the impeller (age unknown to you) and replace the gearcase oil (see if any water got in if so a GC reseal may be in order. use new nylon washers as it may be just the washers not doing their job to seal the GC) unscrrew the top Idle adjustment . needle a half turn...

    it is suppose to be solid (no holes) ) but that fix ain't so bad... you do not need to worry about the filter being clogged up. just clean the brass screen and reinstall it :) in retrospect it is a good solution and a lot cheaper than chasing a new filter . It is a solution I will use...

    well you have what is called a probable low hour motor with those nice coils :-) time to order new ones. Chineese one are cheap and have worked well for me ...if not is a hurry to get them shipping is free may as well get some new condensers to 1.5 - 40HP Outboard Engines Ignition Coil...

    Just a question

    no gasket on the gear case housing just remove 4 bolts and drop it to unbolt the water pump housing for the replacement impeller slide the new impeller down the shaft don't loose the small key & reinstall it check closely the impeller housing has 2 VERY small holes... see pic...
